It’s a question that plenty of people are asking – who are the oldest NBA players entering the 2022-23 season? Many notable veterans are still around and continue to make an impact on the court. This includes one of the greatest basketball players of all time: LeBron James.
I want to focus on some of the oldest NBA players who’re still around and playing basketball at a high level. I also include information about their career accomplishments and explain why they still remain active in the NBA.
Udonis Haslem is the oldest active NBA player who’s now entering his 20th career season. He only trails Kobe Bryant (20) and Dirk Nowitzki (21) for the most seasons with a single franchise in NBA history.
Haslem only appeared in 13 games during the 2021-22 season. However, he brings a lot of cohesion and leadership to the locker room in Miami. Let’s also not forget that he’s a three-time NBA champion.
The power forward is a role model and clearly shows that you can earn a roster spot even in your 40s, provided you’re a true team player.
Iguodala spent two seasons away from Golden State before returning to the team in 2021-22. He was the 2015 Finals MVP for the Warriors during one of multiple NBA Championship seasons. However, despite his longevity, Iguodala only has a single All-Star selection.
The Warriors already have talent at small forward with Andrew Wiggins on the roster. However, Iguodala still adds value to the team. He’s an excellent perimeter defender, and he can make plays on offense. He’s also won four NBA championships in his long career.
Carmelo Anthony isn’t currently on an NBA roster, but I believe he will enter his 20th season as a pro basketball player. I wanted to include him because his career has been nothing short of fantastic. He’s also got enough accolades to enter the Hall of Fame.
Although he’s never won an MVP award, Anthony has earned 10 NBA All-Start selections, and he was the scoring champion in 2013-14. Last season, Anthony averaged 13.3 points and 4.2 rebounds as a bench player.
That’s pretty impressive when you consider his age, and I expect to see him in an NBA uniform once again soon.
Not only is LeBron James one of the greatest NBA players ever, but he’ll also likely become the all-time scoring leader in 2022-23. He’s only 1,325 points behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the all-time standings.
James was the first overall pick in the 2003 NBA draft, and since then, he’s been nothing short of phenomenal in every NBA season he’s played. In 2021-22, he earned All-NBA Third Team honors while averaging 30.3 points per game as a 36-year-old.
P.J. Tucker has never been a first or second option in the NBA, but he’s always been a consistent player. He began turning heads in 2017-18 when he played for the Houston Rockets. The forward is known as a lockdown defender and a reliable role player.
Let’s not forget that Tucker experienced a five-year hiatus from the NBA that began in 2007. He made his triumphant return in 2012 and was a serviceable player for the Suns. He was also a key contributor for the Bucks during the team’s championship run during the 2020-21 season.
Chris Paul is a savvy veteran who’s still chasing that elusive NBA championship. He’s often lauded for his incredible vision of the court and high basketball IQ. Paul is also a future Hall of Famer and has yet to show any signs of significant decline as he enters his late 30s.
When Paul entered the NBA in 2005, he quickly began breaking records for the Hornets. He set the mark for assists and steals during his tenure with the franchise. Paul has bounced around the NBA in recent years but appears to have found another home in Phoenix.
Although Taj Gibson spent his first seven NBA seasons with the Chicago Bulls, he’s become a journeyman. He’s now on his fourth different team in six years, having played for the Knicks, Timberwolves, and Thunder.
In 2021-22, Gibson showed that he can still close out games despite being a long-time NBA veteran. He’s viable as a bench player, and he’ll likely play plenty of meaningful minutes for the Wizards. He also once finished runner-up in the voting for NBA Sixth Man of the Year.
Kyle Lowry doesn’t receive enough credit for how good he is and what he had to overcome. After a slow start to his career, Lowry was eventually able to establish himself in Toronto. He earned his first All-Star selection in 2014-15 after ten seasons in the NBA.
Even though he’s one of the oldest NBA players, Lowry will likely serve a starting role for Miami. He was on the team last season when the Heat played against the Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals, ultimately losing the series in seven games.
Here’s another NBA veteran who’s bounced around the NBA throughout their career. George Hill has played for eight different teams, including the Pacers, Spurs, Cavaliers, Jazz, Kings, and Bucks.
Hill is currently on his second stint with the Bucks, having signed a two-year, $8 million contract back in 2021. He adds a lot of veteran leadership to the team, and his presence in the locker room is what helps hold the team together.
Goran Dragic is making his Bulls debut in 2022 after playing for both the Nets and Raptors last season. The 14-year veteran from Slovenia is one of the old NBA players who’s known for his discipline as a perimeter shooter.
What I respect about Dragic are his versatility and cleverness. Although his career will likely come to a close in the next few seasons, he’s still invigorated to play basketball. Also, with Lonzo Ball’s future up in the air, Dragic should see more playing time.
The old NBA players often provide stability to rosters that lack cohesion. Even if they’re nothing more than role players, the presence of a veteran can make a world of difference.
I also encourage you to learn more about the oldest NBA MVPs in history. You will be surprised by how good certain players can be in the final stages of their careers.
