2019 ICC Cricket World Cup: Top Batsman Betting Preview and Predictions

The 2019 Cricket World Cup has started and while the teams are battling it out to make it to the next round, the world’s top batsmen are also slugging it out for the title of the tournament’s top scorer and the best batsman in the world, at least in the world Cup.

Australia’s David Warner has been installed as the favorite to win the title. The 32-year old cricketer has made a triumphant return from a one-year suspension due to ball-tampering accusations. After being named to Australia’s team to the 2019 Cricket World Cup, Warner made history last June 20 when he became the first batsman to have two 150+ runs games at the World Cup.

Here is the list of favorites for theTop Batsman during the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. Odds taken from Bet365 as of 6/21/19:

Who Are The Favorites?

Despite his one-year ban from the sport, Australia’s David Warner enters the 2019 ICC Cricket World cup in top form. When Warner reported back to the IPL’s Sunrisers Hyderabad, it looked as if he never left at all. His record of seven ’50s and one 100 in his first ten innings back is proof of that. I wouldn’t really be surprised if Warner topped the ICC World Cup’s run-scoring charts. Given his explosiveness with the bat and his quickness between the wickets, no question he should be the top cricket betting favorite to win this title.

Rohit Sharma is an unorthodox batsman whose ruthlessness at the crease has turned him into one of the best one-day batsmen of this generation. The six hitting machine has become a key component of India’s team for years. Sharma’s total of 130 maximums in 71 ODI innings since the previous World Cup is more than enough to consider him as one of the front-runners to finish at the top of the run-scoring standings.

Joe Root is the captain of England’s squad and is currently ranked 6th in test batting and 7th in ODI batting according to the ICC’s player rankings. Root opened his 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup tournament big by scoring two centuries ( against Pakistan and West Indies ) and two fifties in England’s first five matches.

Shakib Al-Hasan is considered as the best cricketer to play for Bangladesh. In the first innings of Bangladesh’s opening match against South Africa, he became the fastest player to score 5,000 runs and take 250 wickets in ODIs in just 199 matches. Last June 17th against the West Indies, Al-Hasan became the second batsman from Bangladesh to score 6,000 ODI runs.

Virat Kohli ability to produce runs consistently is scary. The Indian captain’s 19 ODI centuries since the previous World Cup is unmatched and his average of 78.29 runs per inning during that period is impressive. Those stats, coupled with an insatiable desire to score runs, makes him one of the most feared batsmen in the world.

Johnny Bairstow’s promotion to opening batsman from his former middle-order spot has turned out for the better. Bairstow has become the spearhead of the world’s #1 ODI team. His average is just short of 50 in 57 ODI innings but is in the Top 10 in the scoring charts in the ongoing World Cup. Indeed he plays better on home soil and with this year’s World Cup in England, he’s a man to watch indeed.

Who Wins?

So far, it’s David Warner who has scored the most runs in the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. Warner’s 447 total through 6 games is the highest in the tournament. Warner is followed by Shakib al Hasan of Bangladesh who has 425 in five matches. England’s Joe Root is third with 424 in six matches while Warner’s teammate, Aaron Finch has 396 in six matches as well. Rounding off the top 5 is Rohit Sharma who has 319 in three matches for India.

I’m not Australian nor am I a fan of the Australian team but for this bet, I will have to go with the two Aussies here. David Warner’s 166 against Bangladesh in Australia’s last game made him the first player in World Cup history to have two 150+ scores. It can be recalled that Warner smashed 178 in 2015. With the way he’s been hitting and with Australia poised to go deep in the tournament, he’s a solid betting pick here.

Likewise, I like captain AJ Finch at +500 as a dark horse pick. Finch’s 153 against Sri Lanka is one of the best innings in the tournament so far and his strike rate of 109.69 is the highest among the current Top 5 scorers in the tournament. Finch playing on the same side as Warner gives him as many chances to score as his betting favorite teammate. Prediction: David Warner and AJ Finch
