Lewis Hamilton won the 2020 Hungarian Grand Prix last weekend and took the lead in the 2020 drivers standings for the first time this season. Hamilton has now won back to back races after finishing in a disappointing 4th in the opening race of the season in Austria. The six-time world champion pulled out an eight-second lead in three wet laps at the start of the race before switching to dry tires. He never looked back and controlled the race from then on.
Red Bulls’ Max Verstappen finished second despite figuring in a crash that damaged his front wing and suspension. Valtteri Bottas finished third and yielded the points lead to his teammate after three races completed. Lance Stroll finished fourth for Racing Point while Red Bull’s Alexander Albon took advantage of two unforced errors from Sebastian Vettel to finish in 5th place.
The drivers take the next weekend off before they head to Silverstone on July 31st for the British Grand Prix on August 2nd and the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix race on August 9th. Mercedes is looking unstoppable once again with Hamilton and Bottas going 1-2 in the standings and either driver winning the first three races of the season. Look for Hamilton to be on top of his game once again as action shifts to his home track in England.
After three rounds of Formula 1 action, here’s how the drivers rank in the drivers’ standings:

Lewis Hamilton is once against the odds on favorite to win the 2020 British Grand Prix. The reigning six-time Formula One world champion has won back to back races after finishing 4th in the opening race of the season at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria. The Briton has taken the lead in the drivers’ standings and is looking as good as ever. He is also the winningest driver in the history of the British Grand Prix with a total of six wins. In fact, Hamilton has won five out of the last installments of the race and he finished second in 2018. There is no question that Hamilton thrives when racing in Silverstone. In 13 starts here, Hamilton has finished outside the Top 10 just once and outside the Top 5 only twice. Overall, he’s led in a total of 279 laps in his home race and his six poles are also the most among active drivers.
Valtteri Bottas looks like he is going to be Lewis Hamilton’s chief competitor for the F1 title this year. Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate had his best-ever season in 2019 where he finished 2nd to his more prominent teammate. After winning a career-best four races last season, Bottas started out strong by winning in Austria. However, he finished second to Hamilton in the Styrian Grand Prix and was third during last weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix. Bottas has dropped to second in the standings behind Hamilton but there is no doubt that he is one of the few drivers who pose a real challenge to Hamilton’s seventh world title. Bottas has five Top 5 finishes in seven starts at Silverstone and his average finish of 5.9 is second to Hamilton among current drivers. He took pole position last year but finished second to his teammate. Bottas has finished second in two out of the last three installments of this race.
Max Verstappen is also coming off his best year in 2019. Verstappen finished at a career-best third in the 2019 Formula One world championship and he is seen as the primary non-Mercedes driver to challenge Hamilton this year. This Belgian-Dutch driver had a mishap in the opening race of the season which was supposed to be his home race. He bounced back to finish third behind Hamilton and Bottas in the Styrian Grand Prix before taking second place in last Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix. Verstappen has three Top 5 finishes at Silverstone and he has finished in the Top 5 three times in the last four seasons. His average start of 5.8 at Silverstone is third-best among current drivers and he is one of only nine current drivers to average in a Top 10 finish at the British Grand Prix.
Sergio Perez finished last season in 10th place, his worst since 2014. But the 30-year old Mexican is off to a good start this season as he is firmly in 6th place with a total of 22 points. Perez has finished in the Top 7 in the first three races of the season and he is coming off a 7th place finish at the 2020 Hungarian Grand Prix last weekend. Checo has a total of nine career starts at Silverstone and he has a total of five Top 10 finishes but he has never placed in the Top 5 before. He finished 17th here last year, breaking a streak of four Top 10 finishes in the British Open. His average finish in this race is 11.2
Lance Stroll is another unfamiliar name in the early Top 10. This Belgian-Canadian driver from Racing Point is having a good start to his 2020 season. Stroll didn’t finish the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix but bounced back with a 7th place effort at the Styrian Grand Prix. He was fourth in last weekend’s 2020 Hungarian Grand Prix which is his best finish since last year’s German Grand Prix. Stroll has started the British Grand Prix thrice but has never started higher than 15th place and finish better than 12th. Stroll is averaging a 13.7 finish in the British Grand Prix.
Esteban Ocon is currently in 13th place in the 2020 drivers standings. This 23-year old Frenchman finished 8th in the 2017 Formula One championship but placed 12th the following year. Ocon spent 2019 as a Test Driver but returned to the scene this year. He has started twice in Silverstone and finished 8th in 2017 and 7th in 2018. His average finish of 7.5 is impressive although the sample size may be too small. But if there’s a driver worth your longshot bet for a Top 10 finish if that betting market emerges, it’s Esteban Ocon.
I will not count out Sebastian Vettel despite his poor showing since last season. Vettel is the only active driver to win the British Grand Prix aside from Hamilton and he’s won the race twice.
The German Ferrari driver has his best finish of the year last Sunday when he placed 6th in the 2020 Hungarian Grand Prix. Vettel has not won a race since last year’s Singapore Grand Prix which was his only win in 2019 and his only win in his last 32 races. I know there are plenty of talks about Vettel, his decision to leave Ferrari at the end of the season, and his downward spiral but this is a guy who has led 155 laps at Silverstone, has won two races there, and six Top 5 finishes in 12 British Grand Prix starts.
I am backing Lewis Hamilton in this race. Not only is he in terrific form right now but he is also the most bemedalled driver in this race. There is no doubt that his home race is special to him and Hamilton always finds a way to shine in this race. With this year possibly being the year, he ties Schumacher’s record of seven world titles, expect Hamilton to put on a show in his home track.
