The Super Start Batteries 400 is a NASCAR Cup Series race held at the Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas. It was first held in 2011 after Kansas received a second date in the NASCAR schedule as part of the schedule realignment, with the other being the Hollywood Casino 400.
The 2020 Super Start Batteries 400 was originally scheduled for May 31, 2020, but was rescheduled for July 23, 2020, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is the 19th race of the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season and contested over 267 laps on the 1.5 miles (2.4 km) asphalt speedway.
Brad Keselowski won the inaugural race and he is also the defending race winner. Keselowski is the only driver to win this race more than once. Current drivers who have won at Kansas are Denny Hamlin, Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr., and Kevin Harvick.
In the last race of the season, Austin Dillon stole the thunder as he stayed in front after a restart with two laps to go and he went on to beat rookie Teammate Tyler Reddick to the checkered flag, giving Richard Childress Racing a 1-2 finish in the 2020 O’Reilly Auto Parts 500. It was the first 1-2 finish for RCR in the Cup series since Clint Bowyer won ahead of Jeff Burton at Talladega in 2011.
The victory was the third for Dillon in the Cup Series and his first since winning Daytona in 2018. Joey Logano came in third place while Kyle Busch finished in 4th place a day after finishing ahead of the field in the Xfinity Series and Truck Series races. Series points leader Kevin Harvick finished in 5th place in the race that had 15,000-20,000 spectators on hand.

Kevin Harvick is the current points leader in the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season. The 44-year old leads all drivers with a total of four races won this season. Harvick’s 11 Top 5 finishes this year are also the most by any driver. He has finished in the Top 5 in the last five races of the season with two wins during that period and he is coming off a 5th place finish last weekend. When it comes to Kansas, Harvick’s average finish of 6.8 is the best among current drivers in the last 10 races at that race track. Harvick has finished in the Top 10 in seven of those races and has five Top 5 finishes with two race wins during that period. He was 9th in this race last year.
Chase Elliott is currently 5th in the NASCAR Cup Series standings with one win and seven Top 10 finishes this year. The 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Rookie of the Year has five Top 10 finishes in the last 10 races of the year. Elliott however, only has one Top 10 finish in his last five starts and he is coming off 12th place effort last weekend. He has eight starts in Kansas with a total of four Top 5 finishes including a win in this race in 2018. He’s been solid in this race as he has four Top 4 finishes in the last five years. Elliott was second in this race last year.
Martin Truex Jr. is 7th in the current standings and has three Top 5 finishes this season. The 40-year 2017 NASCAR Cup Series champion is coming off a disappointing 29th place finish last weekend. However, before the last race of the season, Truex had seven Top 10 finishes in his 11 previous races. In Kansas, Trues has a total of six Top 10 finishes in his last 10 starts there including four in the Top 5 with two wins. He has finished in the Top 6 in five out of his last six starts at Kansas and his average finish of 8.3 is third-best among active drivers in the last 10 races in Kansas.
Denny Hamlin is tied with Kevin Harvick for most wins this season with four. The 39-year old had a stretch of six Top 5 finishes during an eight-race span but he’s struggled in the last three races with finishes of 28, 12, and 20. Hamlin won the 2019 Hollywood 400 race here at Kansas last season and he has an average start of 8.8 in this race track. Hamlin has a total of four Top 5 finishes in 10 starts here and is 7th among active drivers in total laps led in the last 10 races with a total of 159.
Kyle Busch is the defending Cup Series champion who has not really made noise this year. Busch is 10th in the current Cup Series standings and he has yet to win a race this year. The 35-year old has a total of eight Top 5 finishes this season and he is coming off a 4th place effort at last weekend’s race. Busch has eight Top 10 finishes in nine starts at Kansas and he has six Top 5 finishes. Busch won this race in 2016 and he’s placed in the Top 3 in two out of the last three races in Kansas. His average finish of 7.9 is second only to Kevin Harvick.
Ryan Blaney is having a fantastic start to his 2020 season. The 26-year old finished 7th in the Cup Series championship last year but after 18 races this year, he is in second place behind points leader Kevin Harvick. Blaney last won six races ago at Talladega and he has a total of seven Top 5 finishes this season. He’s finished 7th or better in eight out of the last 11 races of the year. Blaney has five Top 10 finishes in nine starts at Kansas and he has three Top 5 finishes at this race track. Last weekend, Blaney finished 7th but led six times for a total of 150 laps.
Joey Logano is currently fourth in the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series championship. The 30-year old has four Top 5 finishes and two wins this season. He has finished 15th or worse in four out of the last six races of the year but is coming off a third-place finish at last week’s race. That was his best finish since winning the third race of the year in Phoenix. Logano has four Top 5 finishes and one win at Kansas. He’s also taken the pole position two times and has led in a total of 186 laps, 5th best overall.
When it comes to form, you have to like points leader Kevin Harvick who has been the most consistent driver this season. Harvick also has an excellent track record in Kansas and his average finish here is the best among current drivers. I think Harvick’s a steal at +400 given how he’s raced here. The other driver whose track record in Kansas that I fancy is Chase Elliott who came in second in 2019 and has four Top 4 finishes here in the last five years. I’ll pick Elliott here because he comes in at +150 more than Harvick.
Prediction: Chase Elliott but I won’t blame you if you go with Harvick.
