The 2022-23 NFL Season is officially underway, with teams gearing up to contend for a Super Bowl championship. The focus right now is on the biggest superstars in the league. Many overlook plenty of good players who have been around for a while.
In this article, I highlight the most underrated NFL veterans of 2022-23. These players are still at the top of their game and can make a statement this season despite their age. The focus is on NFL veterans who deserve more recognition.
When you consider his longevity, Marcedes Lewis is perhaps the biggest unsung hero in the NFL. With 16 seasons under his belt, he’s the definition of durability. He’s former a first-round draft pick who developed into one of the best blockers at his position.
In 2021, Lewis showed that he still possesses playmaking abilities. It was his most productive season since 2017, a year in which he caught 318 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns.
Most people expect him to decline big time, but Lewis still has some time in the NFL left.
Here’s one of the most underappreciated players in terms of what he contributes to his team. Tannehill is a capable signal-caller who took over the starting QB position almost immediately when he arrived in Tennessee.
Many consider Tannehill a product of a really good team around him. He thrives at play-action passing schemes, and running back Derrick Henry certainly helps open up the offense. In terms of passer rating, Tannehill also ranks among the best QBs over the past few seasons.
Hayward is another player who doesn’t receive enough recognition for what he does on the field. He’s now in the twilight years of his career, but Hayward is still a competent player who has been reliable for years.
In the past decade, Hayward has demonstrated excellence at one of the most precarious positions in the NFL (cornerback). Last season, Hayward was good enough to earn himself a two-year, $11 million contract with the Falcons.
Consistency and productivity are two words that perfectly describe Lavonte David’s career. He’s a lifetime Buccaneer who many consider the best all-around veteran linebacker in the NFL. Since going pro in 2012, David has played at least 13 games every season.
Let’s also not forget that David played a crucial role in the Buccaneers’ 2020 Super Bowl run. He won a world championship for a team stacked with talent at virtually every position. He was also part of Tom Brady’s record-setting seventh Super Bowl victory.
David has amassed some impressive stats over his 10-year career. The list includes 12 interceptions, 17 fumble recoveries, 26 forced fumbles, 26 sacks, and 56 pass breakups. He’s an impact player who can do a lot of different things on defense.
Why do I consider Jerry Hughes one of the most underrated NFL veterans of 2022-23? Despite years of consistency as a pass rusher, he hasn’t earned a single Pro Bowl selection.
Hughes also excelled during his time in Buffalo, where he played the bulk of his career. He was a leader on the field and was consistently getting after opposing QBs. Although his production was dropping off, Hughes finished his nine-year tenure in Buffalo with 52.5 sacks.
Here’s an underrated NFL veteran in 2022-23 who does everything right as an interior defensive lineman. Graham has been an anchor for the Eagle’s defense since he entered the league in 2010. Prior to 2021, Graham only missed one game over a nine-year stretch.
Similar to Hughes, Graham is a player who helps build a winning culture within the locker room. His sack totals have never climbed into the double digits, but Graham is a complete player who’s still pretty good entering his 13th season.
The LA Rams have a roster that consists of several superstar players. This includes Aaron Donald, Cooper Kupp, and Matthew Stafford, who were all instrumental in the Ram’s Super Bowl victory last season. Troy Hill, however, often gets overlooked in Los Angeles.
Not only is he an impact player, but Hill can also make plays in the biggest moments. He’s a good tackler and has exceptional ball-hawking skills. Hill was an undrafted player out of college, but he continues to exceed expectations.
After spending five years in Cincinnati and four in Detroit, Jones now finds himself in Jacksonville. Despite bouncing around the NFL, he’s overachieved and is somehow getting better. He’s one of the most underrated NFL veterans in terms of what people expect from him.
Jones is a player who has incredible determination and makes the most of every opportunity. Since 2013, Jones has amassed at least 500 receiving yards and four touchdowns in every NFL season. In 2020, Jones had over 800 receiving yards for a terrible Jaguars team.
One of the best ways to utilize your knowledge of underrated NFL veterans would be to target player props. All top football betting sites offer them throughout the season, so feel free to check them out.
