The popularity of women’s soccer has skyrocketed over the past decade. It’s become quite a big deal, with millions of fans cheering on their favorite countries competing in major tournaments.
None of them is bigger than the FIFA Women’s World Cup, which only happens once every four years. We’ll have the pleasure of watching the best teams from all over the globe in 2023!
If you need some help picking the right matches, I highlight all the biggest World Cup 2023 stars in this article.
Alexia Putellas
- Country: Spain
- Position: Midfielder
- Age: 29
Alexia Putellas is a superstar, plain and simple. She is by far the best Spanish player and one of the top athletes in the world of female soccer. The 29-year-old midfielder is intelligent, technical, and knows how to get creative with the ball.
You could even argue that Putellas is in a category of her own. She’s essentially won every major award over the past two years. This includes the Ballon d’Or Feminin, the Best FIFA Women’s Player, and the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year award!
Putellas does pretty much everything well and contributes in many different ways. She can play as an attacking midfielder or a second striker, finishing every season with many goal contributions.
The Spanish side is one of the favorites for the tournament, and Putellas is among the main reasons behind that. I expect a strong performance from her in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Sam Kerr
- Country: Australia
- Position: Forward
- Age: 29
Sam Kerr also instantly came to mind when I thought about the biggest stars in the Women’s Soccer World Cup. In fact, if it wasn’t for Alexia Putellas, Kerr would be my top player. She’s won the Golden Boot award on three different continents. Need I say anything else?
Kerr tore up the competition in the NWSL before she joined Chelsea in 2020. Since then, she’s done nothing but score goals and solidify her legacy. In 2021-22, Kerr found the net 20 times in 20 games during league play for the Blues. That kind of production is incredible.
I think Kerr is a special player because she can score from virtually any angle on the field. She’s also embarrassed goalkeepers in the past with her incredible creativity. The 29-year-old striker will be the key to success for Australia at the World Cup, so watch out for her.
Vivianne Miedema
- Country: Netherlands
- Position: Forward
- Age: 26
Vivianne Miedema is among the top World Cup star players in 2023. She’s only 26 but has already scored the most goals for the Dutch national team. Miedema also averages 0.83 goals per game in the Women’s Super League, which is simply mind-boggling.
Miedema is one of the most natural finishers in women’s pro soccer. She finds the net as consistently as any other striker in the world. Although she’s known for her goal-scoring, the Dutch forward’s playmaking abilities are phenomenal overall.
After she won the 2017 UEFA Women’s Euro with the Netherlands, Miedema took her country to the World Cup final in 2019. She will be eager to at least repeat that feat in 2023.
Catarina Macario
- Country: United States
- Position: Midfielder
- Age: 23
Catarina Macario is a superstar in the making, and everyone will know about her after this summer. Although she’s from Brazil, Macario emigrated when she was 12. Since she arrived in the U.S., the young phenom has quickly risen through the ranks.
While attending Stanford University, Macario took her talents to Lyon in 2020. In just her second season, she scored 14 goals in 20 games during domestic competition. Macario was also the top goalscorer for Lyon in 2021-22, having led her team to a Champions League title.
Macario is still pretty new to competing in women’s international soccer. However, she’s already scored eight goals in 17 outings during her young career. Macario was also instrumental for the U.S. when the Americans won the SheBelieves Cup back in February.
Caroline Graham-Hansen
- Country: Norway
- Position: Winger
- Age: 28
Caroline Graham-Hansen is one of the stars to watch at the Women’s Soccer World Cup. The Norwegian player is extremely gifted, and her career includes plenty of accomplishments. She’s also played in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final four different times!
During her time with Wolfsburg, Graham-Hansen had massive success on the field. Now she’s with Barcelona, and it’s been much of the same story. Graham-Hansen has simply dominated European competitions, racking up plenty of goals and assists in the process.
No one is quite as good as Graham-Hansen when it comes to dribbling and duping defenders. She plays with so much finesse that you can’t help but marvel at her abilities. She’s capable of challenging any player one-on-one.
The combination of speed, creativity, technical ability, and athleticism makes the Norwegian a nightmare opponent. I’m confident that Graham-Hansen will represent Norway extremely well in the 2023 World Cup.
