2014 NBA Picks: Predicting Wednesday’s Games

Wednesday is a massive day for NBA betting, so we can’t waste much time. We’re fresh off of a quiet Tuesday that boasted just four NBA contests, while we know many bets are going to be placed over the next 12 hours. We carry last night’s 2-2 mark and a 79-41 season record into what surely figures to be a chaotic 11-game night of NBA action:

Spurs @ Cavaliers

The Spurs were a little sluggish on defense to start the year, but have rebounded nicely to allow just 91 points per game. The Cavaliers, meanwhile, have been exciting to watch on offense but are giving up an atrocious 104 points per game. San Antonio should have a field day, despite this one being in Cleveland.

Pick: Spurs 108, Cavs 102

Mavericks @ Wizards

Dallas is absolutely rolling right now as the league’s most efficient and explosive offense. Their defense leaves something to be desired at times but they’re actually not so bad on that end these days. A road game against the Wiz is a challenge, but who could bet against the Mavs on their current four-game run?

Pick: Mavs 109, Wizards 99

Celtics @ 76ers

In what could easily be the most explosive battle of the night, the Celtics and Sixers both bring up tempo offenses and almost zero defense to the table. Philly’s offense has actually been tough and go and they’re still winless, though, so it’s tough to ride with them tonight (or any night). If you’re chasing a game with big points, this is the one to target.

Pick: Celtics 113, 76ers 110

Clippers @ Magic

The Clippers have flashed greatness this year but overall haven’t been close to the team that looked like a potential title contender a year ago. They’ll get it right eventually, while they don’t necessarily need their best game to top a good (but over matched) Magic squad.

Pick: Clippers 107, Magic 104

Hornets @ Pacers

Charlotte is lacking the defensive edge they had last year, and the same can be said for the Pacers. This normally would be a defensive battle with bad offense, but right now it’s just the bad offense we can count on. Indiana has been getting slapped around lately, though, so it’s hard to pick them, even at home.

Pick: Hornets 104, Pacers 97

Grizzlies @ Raptors

Memphis just might be the best team in the entire league right now, as they’re fresh off of dominating a very good Rockets team. Toronto is good, too, and could easily give them a fight at home. Memphis isn’t afraid of the road, though (4-1), so they should be the favorites.

Pick: Grizzlies 91, Raptors 88

Suns @ Pistons

If the Pistons decide to run at home tonight, they could easily get past the Suns. Phoenix is the more talented and deeper squad, though, and the Pistons continue to use Andre Drummond inappropriately. Detroit seems to still be finding itself and the Suns have a dangerous trio of guards that can go off at any time.

Pick: Suns 104, Pistons 100

Bucks @ Nets

Milwaukee is suddenly a playoff team (6-5) thanks to solid defense and a balanced offense. They still live largely on the jumper, but Brooklyn is reeling with four straight losses, so perhaps they’re catching them at the right time.

Pick: Bucks 99, Nets 97

Knicks @ Timberwolves

The Knicks have been hit or miss and Carmelo Anthony is a little banged up, but there’s no Ricky Rubio, Nikola Pekovic or Thaddeus Young here.

Pick: Knicks 98, Timberwolves 96

Thunder @ Nuggets

Denver is one of the toughest teams in the league to predict, but one thing that seems consistent is that one way or another they’re involved in a blowout on a regular basis. They’re at home and looked pretty good in their last outing, but OKC has been competitive and is playing solid defense. We’ll give the feisty Thunder the edge here tonight.

Pick: Thunder 105, Nuggets 102

Lakers @ Rockets

Houston will be wanting to get the taste of a blowout out of their mouths, while losing to the 2-9 Lakers at home just isn’t going to be an option. L.A. has had some fight in them over their last five games and they just got Swaggy P back, but they shouldn’t be much of a match for the Rockets on the road.

Pick: Rockets 109, Lakers 102
