NBA Predictions For Thursday, 2/5/15

We overcame a few bad picks to end Big NBA Wednesday with a solid 7-4 mark, so hopefully you bet along with us and made out with some cash last night. We get right back to it for Thursday’s games, which end up being a light four-pack. We know by now that is to set us up for a mountainous three-day event over the next few days, but we’ll still try to crush the night with some golden NBA picks.

Less games offers fewer chances to stumble into awful upsets, so let’s run through the games and see if we can’t nail down a perfect 4-0 mark and improve upon our 417-216 season record:

Washington Wizards @ Charlotte Hornets

Washington and Charlotte get Thursday night going, as these two teams face for the second time in four nights. Charlotte got the best of Washington in D.C., as these two squads appear to actually matchup quite well. The Hornets will need another big outing from Al Jefferson to go up 2-0 in the season series, but that could go down with the Wiz coming in with an ugly four-game skid.

Pick: Hornets 101, Wizards 98

Los Angeles Clippers @ Cleveland Cavaliers

Cleveland has won 11 straight games and gets a hefty test tonight when Chris Paul and Blake Griffin come to town. Griffin destroyed the Cavs last time, but Cleveland still won a crazy 126-121 shootout in L.A. With the Cavs on a serious role, look for them to hold their ground and get a 12th straight win.

Pick: Cavs 109, Clippers 106

Dallas Mavericks @ Sacramento Kings

Dallas could be dead tired when they head to Sac-town tonight, as they’re fresh off of a marathon outing against the Warriors. The Kings should be well rested and could have a real shot at upending the Mavs in a trap game.

Pick: Kings 104, Mavs 102

Phoenix Suns @ Portland Trail Blazers

In one of the better games of the night, the Suns travel to Portland to try to take down the Blazers. Portland could be getting back on track and will aim for their second win in a row, but they’ve been shaky lately (3-7 in last 10 games) and the Suns can be a lot to handle offensively. That being said, Portland is still a staggering 21-5 on their home floor this year and with Robin Lopez returning last game, they are now 100% healthy.

Pick: Blazers 108, Suns 105

Wizards Marcin Gortat

NBA Picks For Wednesday, 2/4

The 76ers won again, the Knicks didn’t and we got turned right around for a pedestrian 3-2 run on a quiet Tuesday night. We didn’t drown, but we would have fared better had we bought into Denver’s struggles and not been suckered by the Knicks. In the end, everything probably went exactly as it should and it helped prepare us for a heavy Wednesday night.

We’re fully loaded with 11 NBA games to pick tonight, and while perfection is probably out of the question, we’ll at least look to pile on some extra wins to our 410-213 season mark:

Pistons @ Pacers

Detroit is slowly getting back on track after losing star point guard Brandon Jennings, as they’ll enter Indiana with two straight wins. The Pacers still pack a punch defensively, but their inability to piece together consistent offense puts them at a disadvantage in this showdown. D.J. Augustin could have revenge on the brain, too.

Pick: Pistons 104, Pacers 97

Wizards @ Hawks

Atlanta looks to start a new winning streak when the Wizards come to town, while John Wall is banged up and Marcin Gortat will come into the night without his mohawk. Change is happening, but Hawks fans will bank on it being for the better thanks to Atlanta’s gaudy 23-3 home record.

Pick: Hawks 107, Wiz 104

Nuggets @ Celtics

Denver has been a total mess, as they’ve lost three straight and nine of their last 10. Boston isn’t the toughest opponent in the world, but they do put up points and they host this one. We should expect to see a lot of offense, but the Celtics could be the slight favorites.

Pick: Celtics 105, Nuggets 103

Nets @ Raptors

These two teams combined for an epic double overtime battle in their last meeting, so we might be able to expect another gritty showdown. Toronto edged the Nets that time and owns a 2-0 series lead, so they should be the pick even with Deron Williams being back.

Pick: Raps 107, Nets 104

Thunder @ Pelicans

Kevin Durant is probably out another game and OKC just hasn’t looked great overall, anyways. A suddenly very solid Pellies team plays host and should look to get a third straight win.

Pick: Pelicans 103, Thunder 102

Bulls @ Rockets

Dwight Howard is still out and James Harden is slightly iffy for this one, while the Bulls host with a completely healthy lineup. Chicago is actually solid on the road and if Houston is down two stars, the Bulls could win, going away.

Pick: Bulls 106, Rockets 104

Lakers @ Bucks

Milwaukee is heating up with four straight wins entering tonight, and now they get to host the Lakers, who have lost nine of their last 10 contests. It’s hard not to fall in love with the Bucks tonight, but if Brandon Knight is out for the second straight game, we could understand rolling with L.A.

Pick: Bucks 102, Lakers 99

Heat @ Timberwolves

Dwyane Wade is still out and Miami heads to Minnesota, where a suddenly fully healthy Timberwolves team could start getting wins at a higher rate. The T’Wolves have dropped three straight and eight out of 10, but Ricky Rubio, Nikola Pekovic and Kevin Martin are all back. We’ll take the healthy T’Wolves tonight.

Pick: Timberwolves 101, Heat 98

Magic @ Spurs

Orlando is a dumpster fire right now and it’s probably only a matter of time before Jacque Vaughn gets canned. Heading into San Antonio with nine straight losses doesn’t help.

Pick: Spurs 108, Magic 102

Grizzlies @ Jazz

Utah has actually been pretty competitive lately (4-6 in their last 10) and plays solid defense when Rudy Gobert is on the court, but their lack of consistency makes them a tough upset pick. That’s especially the case when they’ve got the Grizzlies, winners of seven in a row, coming into town.

Pick: Grizz 105, Jazz 101

Mavericks @ Warriors

Dallas and Golden State cap the night with a potential classic, as two hot offenses wage war. The Warriors rarely lose at home (22-2), but they’ve slipped a bit lately and the Mavs come in hot with three wins in a row. We can probably expect a solid effort from Dallas offensively, but their defense still needs work and betting against Stephen Curry and co. at the Oracle Arena is rather silly.

Pick: Warriors 107, Mavs 105

2015 PGA Tour: Farmers Insurance Open Preview

The 2015 PGA Tour continues on this week, when this year’s Farmers Insurance Open hits us smack dab in the face on Thursday, February 5th. Tiger Woods is one of the hotter names as he still tries to prove to everyone he can make it back to the highest level (he hasn’t yet), while another aging golf stud in Phil Mickelson will try to add to his solid four wins at Torrey Pines. Around since 1957, Torrey Pines plays as a par-72 and measures out at 7,698 yards. Based on the Pacific coast in San Diego, it makes for a scenic and yet challenging course.

Scott Stallings was king kong in this event last year, as he notched his third career PGA Tour win, leaving Jason Day to pick up the scraps in second place. Both could be players in this year’s Farmers Insurance Open again, but they aren’t alone by a long shot. Let’s break down the key threats to win this year’s FIO:

Dustin Johnson’s Return

Johnson returns from an almost year-long break from the green, due to personal reasons and alleged drug issues. He just became a father and assuming he’s mentally ready to make a successful comeback, his long drive needs to be looked at as a real problem for the rest of the pool.

Jason Day vs. Scott Stallings

Revenge is the natural word here, as Day was last year’s runn-erup to the aforementioned Stallings. Stallings can have his hat thrown back into the ring here as the defending champ, too, but Day has to be the sexier play. The #8 player in the world these days, Day has been red hot and should come into the Farmers Insurance Open with some nice momentum.

Jimmy Walker’s Roll

Walker is playing the best golf anyone will find right now. He finished second at the Tournament of Champions and followed that up by winning the Sony Open. He’s been a monster statistically and sits atop everyone else in the FedEx Cup Standings. He’s not necessarily a lock to win the Farmers Insurance Open, but he should be in the mix late.

The Darkhorses

Look no further than Mickelson and Woods. Mickelson withdrew from this very competition last year with a bad back, while Woods didn’t even make the cut. Woods’ making the cut will be a key storyline this year, while Mickelson appears to be in good shape and ready to create a storm this time around. Both have the talent and experience to mess with people’s picks, so be sure to consider them.

The Winner

Rickie Fowler, Bill Haas, Martin Laird and Justin Rose are a few more names to watch, but in the end it might be best to go with simple logic. Jimmy Walker is red hot and he’s got to be the early favorite to end the FIO with the win.

Klay Thompson and Mark Jackson

NBA Picks For Tuesday, 2/3

The Cavaliers kept their winning streak alive, Atlanta saw theirs get snapped and we barely made it out of Monday night alive with a 5-3 mark. We blame a last second Jarrett Jack basket and a Nets upset win over the Clippers, the Hawks finally losing (after 19 straight wins!) and Toronto losing to the Bucks at home. Other than that, it was a pretty great start to the week and that sends us into Tuesday with a still stout 407-211 season record.

The NBA commotion calms down somewhat on Tuesday with just five games on the docket, but there are still NBA picks to be made and cash to be won. Let’s get to it:

Nuggets @ 76ers

Philly has been getting up to play lately due to some tough opponents with winning streaks, but they have lost two straight (8 of 10) and could be without star point guard Michael Carter-Williams tonight (shin, ankle injuries). Already lacking talent, Philly will find it tough to run with the Nuggets tonight, even at home.

Pick: Nuggets 104, Sixers 95

Heat @ Pistons

Hassan Whiteside continues his meteoric rise, but he and the Heat will have to try to win in Detroit tonight without Dwyane Wade and Luol Deng. The Pistons have been on a downward slide ever since point guard Brandon Jennings went down (Achilles), but this looks like a good time for them to snap out of their funk.

Pick: Pistons 102, Heat 99

Celtics @ Knicks

New York is actually 5-5 over their last 10 games and can give teams hell whenever Carmelo Anthony takes the court, which could be bad news for the visiting Celtics. Boston comes in as losers of three straight and they can’t defend, so it’s hard to go against the surging Knicks if Melo is on the floor.

Pick: Knicks 101, Celtics 98

Jazz @ Trail Blazers

Utah has been playing better defense and Gordon Hayward is fresh off of a huge game, but winning in Portland is a tough task. The Blazers have lost three straight and 8 of their last 10, but they need to get the switch turned back on. Beating the Jazz on their home floor is one way to get it done.

Pick: Blazers 106, Jazz 102

Warriors @ Kings

Klay Thompson dropped 37 points in one quarter the last time he faced the Kings, who are struggling and have won just two of their last 10 contests. Sacramento does play host, but big man DeMarcus Cousins is questionable and the Kings are truly over-matched. Golden State doesn’t need another 50+ point outing from Thompson to get this win.

Pick: Warriors 106, Kings 103

Hawks and Pacers

NBA Picks For Monday, 2/2/2015

Sunday was an odd one, giving us NBA betting folk a piddly two games to bet on. Unfortunately we went 0-2 on the day and we had the rest of the night to think about it – and also watch the Super Bowl. That ended up being one hell of a game, and had Seattle ran Marshawn Lynch like anyone would have, our Seahawks pick would have panned out. Overall, we were a dreadful and regrettable 0-3 in our sports picks for Sunday, and we can’t wait for the new week to wash our sins away.

Monday offers a quick cleanse, as we get eight NBA contests to help us forget all that kills us deep inside. There are some key injuries to look out for, so keep player health in mind as you join us and our 402-208 season record on a busy Monday night:

76ers @ Cavaliers

Cleveland is on a roll and will host Philly tonight trying to go for win number 11 in a row. The Sixers have actually been competitive and almost ended Atlanta’s winning streak, so the Cavs might have to take them seriously. Even so, LeBron James and co. are at home and are white hot, so it’d be crazy to bet against them.

Pick: Cavs 110, Sixers 96

Hornets @ Wizards

Charlotte has oddly been on a roll lately (7-3 in last 10), but coming in and topping the Wiz won’t be easy, as Washington is 18-7 at home. John Wall is banged up and could sit this one out, though, so I like the Hornets as a sneaky upset play.

Pick: Hornets 96, Wizards 95

Clippers @ Nets

Brooklyn got housed by the Clippers in Los Angeles just a couple of weeks ago and L.A. has been red hot (8-2 in last 10). Brooklyn could get Deron Williams back off the bench, but they’ve dropped four in a row and don’t look good right now.

Pick: Clips 106, Nets 95

Bucks @ Raptors

Milwaukee could give Toronto problems due to their defense, but we all know by now they’re a no-name bunch that packs an inconsistent scoring punch. The Raptors are keeping a good balance and play host with six straight wins coming into tonight.

Pick: Raptors 104, Bucks 97

Hawks @ Pelicans

The Pellies have been solid and they get Anthony Davis back, but Atlanta comes in with an NBA-best 19-game winning streak. They could make it 20 in a row tonight.

Pick: Hawks 105, Pelicans 99

Magic @ Thunder

The Thunder have a nice chance to end a two-game skid at home against the Magic, who are reeling with eight straight losses. Given Orlando’s horrific defense and poor play specifically away from home (and everywhere), OKC is the easy pick.

Pick: Thunder 107, Magic 102

Timberwolves @ Mavericks

Dallas is getting things back together and gets a third straight cakewalk game when they host the struggling T’Wolves tonight. Minnesota gets even healthier with Ricky Rubio’s possible return, but he should be limited. Dallas takes a minor hit with Rajon Rondo out (face), but I actually like them more without him.

Pick: Mavs 107, T’Wolves 101

Grizzlies @ Suns

Phoenix has the ability to run anyone dead and they play host tonight, but the Grizzlies have won six straight and are able to shut even the best offenses down. Phoenix has a chance, but we prefer Memhis to keep their streak alive tonight.

Pick: Grizz 105, Suns 102

Carmelo Anthony

Sunday’s NBA Picks: Will Melo Face the Lakers?

The NBA gets light on Sunday, as the league slows things down with just two afternoon games a day after a heavy 11-game onslaught. We made it through Saturday night alive with a solid 7-4 mark, lifting our season record to 402-206. We have a light lineup today, but that should give us a great shot at a nice 2-0 sweep. Let’s break down both games and see if we can’t help NBA bettors win some cash:

Miami Heat @ Boston Celtics

Miami has been struggling all year long and those struggles are going to be even more evident with Dwyane Wade and Luol Deng both sidelined with injuries. On the bright side, big man Hassan Whiteside has been a revelation and along with Chris Bosh, gives the Heat a pretty formidable front line. Miami can compete with anyone when they keep the offensive pace slow and buckle down on defense, but winning won’t come easy if they can’t get buckets. Without two of their best wing players, I think even winning in Boston could be tough. The Celtics don’t play much defense, but as they stand they might pack a slightly better offensive punch at the moment.

Pick: Celtics 102, Heat 97

Los Angeles Lakers @ New York Knicks

This game is a total crap shoot, as Kobe Bryant is done for the year and the bottom line is we never know what to expect out of either of these teams. Los Angeles likes to get shots up and raise the pace, while the Knicks prefer to keep things a little slower. Carmelo Anthony being active would obviously be huge for New York’s chances of pulling out a win for the fifth time in 11 tries (pretty unbelievable), but even if he hits the floor this should be anyone’s game given the lack of defense on either end. For now, it looks like he’ll be out there. I like this to be a good, competitive game if he’s there, but even with him the Knicks haven’t been great at getting wins. Jordan Clarkson and Wayne Ellington have stepped up in a big way for the Lakers and this is a nice matchup for them, too, so add in Carlos Boozer, Jordan Hill and Jeremy Lin and I think L.A. ultimately should steal this one. If Melo is out, the Lakers could have it, easily.

Pick: Lakers 105, Knicks 103

NBA Picks For Saturday, 1/31

The 76ers won their second straight game, the Hawks won their 18th in a row and Toronto and Brooklyn took it to two extra periods in a crazy Friday Night. We still made our way through the chaos with a solid 6-3 (395-202 on the year) mark and head into the weekend trying to help NBA bettors win even more cash. Let’s get to it:

Mavericks @ Magic

Dallas finally snapped a four-game skid last night and they have a chance at building a winning streak against a very bad Orlando defense. The Magic play host and can be pretty competitive, but they just don’t have the balance to keep up with the Mavs.

Pick: Mavs 105, Magic 99

Kings @ Pacers

Indy hosts a struggling Kings squad that has lost eight straight, but Sacramento is still undoubtedly the more talented team. The Kings won’t have it easy, but if they can bring their offense they should be able to finally get a win.

Pick: Kings 101, Pacers 96

Raptors @ Wizards

Toronto should be dead tired after enjoying a marathon win over the Nets last night, so the balanced Wizards should be the favorite tonight. Washington is a tough out any night, but when at home they play their best ball.

Pick: Wiz 104, Raptors 100

76ers @ Hawks

Atlanta has won 18 straight and is at home. And it’s the Sixers. Enough said.

Pick: Hawks 108, Sixers 88

Rockets @ Pistons

Dwight Howard remains out but everyone is stepping up in Houston and the Rockets have won four consecutive games. Detroit, meanwhile, has taken a dip since point guard Brandon Jennings went down.

Pick: Rockets 106, Pistons 101

Blazers @ Bucks

Portland has been in shambles lately after losing two straight and seven of their last 10, so they’ll look to bounce back with a nice road win in Milwaukee. The Bucks play sound defense and good team offense, but they’re over-matched here.

Pick: Blazers 104, Bucks 97

Cavaliers @ Timberwolves

Kevin Love returns to Minnesota for the first time in what should be an emotional game for him and the Cavs. Look for his Cleveland teammates to rally behind him as the Cavaliers trounce a bad Timberwolves squad for their 10th straight win.

Pick: Cavs 109, T’Wolves 104

Thunder @ Grizzlies

OKC isn’t really clicking right now, so winning in Memphis against a Grizzlies team rolling with five straight wins won’t be easy. Memphis has superior defense and if they can get Mike Conley back for this one, they’ll be the heavy favorites.

Pick: Grizz 102, Thunder 101

Hornets @ Nuggets

Al Jefferson should be able to abuse Denver down low, as Charlotte continues to try to battle back into the Eastern playoff race. The Nuggets have lost eight of their last 10 and just aren’t playing good ball, so the Hornets should impose their will defensively in a nice road win.

Pick: Hornets 98, Nuggets 95

Clippers @ Spurs

L.A. had a nice six-game winning streak snapped last night and now they’ll travel to San Antonio to take on the well rested Spurs. San Antonio is at home and healthy, so they’re tough to go against tonight.

Pick: Spurs 106, Clippers 102

Suns @ Warriors

Phoenix enters the war zone that is Golden State on the second game of a back to back, so they could be a little run down. The Warriors are also playing their second game in two nights, but they never lose at home and need to snap a two-game skid.

Pick: Warriors 107, Suns 104

Kyrie Irving

NBA Predictions For Friday, 1/30

Three ugly blowouts got a light Thursday night started, but everything ended with a bang in Los Angeles, where the Lakers somehow took out the visiting Bulls in double overtime. We had the three blowouts figured out but didn’t see that coming out of the Lakers, which killed a run at a perfect night and sent us into Friday with a 3-1 mark.

That was still a solid showing that lifted us up to 389-199 on the year and got us ready for a fully loaded Friday night (nine games!). Let’s break down each game quickly and see if we can’t help NBA bettors win some cash tonight via our NBA picks:

Timberwolves @ 76ers

Two really bad teams butt heads tonight when the T’Wolves and Sixers square off. Both teams actually won their last game, which means one of these sorry squads is actually suddenly going to have a two-game winning streak. We’re betting on Minnesota, since they have way more talent and are getting healthy right now with Kevin Martin and Nikola Pekovic back in the lineup.

Pick: Timberwolves 104, Sixers 101

Blazers @ Hawks

Atlanta tries to make it 18 straight tonight at home, but that won’t be easy against a very good Blazers team that should be close to full strength. LaMarcus Aldridge (thumb) and Nicolas Batum (wrist) are both still battling through injuries and at some point they have to stop the bleeding (losers of four of their last 10). They could make it happen tonight, but we’re not betting against the Hawks, who are extremely tough on their home floor.

Pick: Hawks 103, Blazers 101

Rockets @ Celtics

Dwight Howard is out again, but James Harden should be more than enough for Houston when the Rockets take on the Celtics in Boston. Houston has won three straight and has looked solid enough without their big man in the middle, and they won’t miss him against an awful Celtics defense.

Pick: Rockets 106, Celtics 102

Kings @ Cavaliers

Kyrie Irving lost it the other night (55 points!) as the Cavs extended their winning streak to eight games. LeBron James or not (wrist) it’s silly to bet against this Cleveland team right now – especially in a winnable game at home.

Pick: Cavs 109, Kings 104

Raptors @ Nets

Toronto heads to Brooklyn for a nice divisional battle with the Nets. Of course, it’d be nice if Brooklyn was any good right now, but they’ve lost three straight and the Raptors seem to be back to normal with a solid four-game winning streak going.

Pick: Raptors 99, Nets 95

Clippers @ Pelicans

Anthony Davis could be on the shelf after getting hurt in his last game, and if he’s out a Pellies team already missing Jrue Holiday could be in serious trouble. In come the Clippers, who have won six straight and are playing pretty good ball. They’re a little more vulnerable on the road, but with the injuries in New Orleans, they’re the easy pick.

Pick: Clips 105, Pellies 102

Mavericks @ Heat

Dwyane Wade and Luol Deng are both out, so the slow-tempo Heat are in major trouble when they host a fast-paced Dallas offense. The Mavs badly need a win to erase a four-game skid, and this looks like a good game to get them going again.

Pick: Mavs 107, Heat 94

Warriors @ Jazz

Golden State lost their seventh game of the year in their last contest so they’ll look to get another streak going against the lowly Jazz. Utah’s defense has been decent lately but they probably don’t have enough firepower on offense to keep up with the Splash Brothers.

Pick: Warriors 114, Jazz 104

Bulls @ Suns

Chicago is dead tired after a marathon loss to L.A. and they might just be dead, in general. Derrick Rose and Jimmy Butler both got nicked up last night and Chicago could be in trouble with the high-flying Suns in Phoenix.

Pick: Suns 108, Bulls 104

Marshawn Lynch

Super Bowl 49 Line and Pick

The 49th Super Bowl won’t be one that is wanting for controversy. Nor will it be lacking intrigue. The New England Patriots pack the controversy in tight for Super Bowl XLIX, as they come into Arizona fresh off of a “Deflategate” scandal that actually isn’t even resolved. Their plight to win their fourth Super Bowl in seven tries is made even more difficult when you consider their opponent combined with the off-field drama.

Seattle as a challenge will do, as they boast the #1 overall defense (top-five against both the pass and run) and are the defending Super Bowl champions. Tom Brady and co. just want to avoid losing a third straight NFL title, while the Seahawks aim to win back to back championships and just their second Lombardi Trophy ever. Needless to say, this is arguably one of the most intense Super Bowls ever and these teams haven’t even hit the field.

Even more intense than the actual hype or game, however, just might be this year’s Super Bowl line. Betting on the Super Bowl is going to be extremely difficult this year, as the Patriots carry a -1 line as the “favorite” into this battle. Seattle is the proposed “underdog” in what truly amounts to a pick’em affair. All of the analysis in the world can prepare people for this one, as it could literally go either way and the oddsmakers clearly agree.

The Total

This game has a set total of 47.5 and it’s hard to see that being met. If you’re not comfortable with the line (and how could you be?), you should be able to find some solace in the Total, which could project as high as 24-23 (for the Under). That’s a solid notion to chase, since the Seahawks gave up a league low 15.9 points per game on the year. New England is certainly no pushover offensively, as they ended the year with the fourth best scoring offense at over 29 points per game. Seattle wasn’t a slouch, either, as they put up over 24 points per game (10th) on the year.

Even just by averaging out what Seattle has given up and what the Patriots usually score, you get 22 points for the Patriots and by doing the same against New England’s 19 points allowed per game on defense, the Seahawks project to score about 21.5. By points alone, the Patriots barely come out ahead. This is just one way to show just how close this matchup appears to be, but should also display the likelihood of the Total being met.

New England’s history in the big game bodes well for a low Total projection, as well, as their last two Super Bowls were well under the current 47.5 total. The same is for Seattle on one side, as they held the best offense in the league last year (Denver Broncos) to just eight points. Thanks to New England’s balanced offense and a better defense than the Broncos had a year ago, a 43-8 blowout is far less likely. The odds, it seems, appear to be in favor of a low Total and a hard-fought, down to the wire game.

The Pick

All of that makes this in a sense a straight up pick, and if that’s the case, it’s hard not to take the Seahawks. New England absolutely has the better pure pocket passer in Brady, a solid running game with a stable of competent running backs, a dangerous slot receiver in Julian Edelman and a huge difference-maker in tight end Rob Gronkowski. They even have a very solid defense backed by star corner Darrelle Revis. The Seahawks have the better defense, though, boast an elusive passer in Russell Wilson, one of the best running backs in the league in Marshawn Lynch and a group of seemingly underrated wide receivers.

The problem? Seattle seems to have a loud, emphatic answer for everything the Pats’ offense can throw at them. Stud safeties Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas could easily lock down Gronkowski (they did it to Jimmy Graham last year), Seattle’s third-ranked run defense could shut down LeGarrette Blount and their top-ranked pass defense could stifle New England’s fairly pedestrian receiving corps. Since they’ve been doing these very things all year and come in white hot on a 10-game winning streak, that’s what is likely to take place.

Ultimately, the Seahawks are probably going to win this game, and for so many reasons. This is betting on the Super Bowl, though. Betting in general is a guess based on research. The numbers and logic tell us these teams are closely matched, but the Seahawks are from top to bottom the better team. Look for Seattle to win a nail-biter, one that might even come down to the last play, but also will stay under the listed Total. Take the Seahawks and Under the Total this Super Bowl Sunday, and you just might end the NFL season on a high note.

Pick: Seahawks 23, Patriots 16

Jose Calderon Knicks

NBA Picks For Thursday, 1/29

A heavy Wednesday night gave way to chaos, as Kyrie Irving erupted for a career high 55 points, the Atlanta Hawks won for the 17th time in a row and all but two teams took care of business on their home floor. That comes a night after zero teams won in their own stadium, so it looks as though things might be back to normal. We went a steady 7-4 despite the Knicks shocking the Thunder and the Pistons getting housed by the Pistons.

Overall, it was a good Wednesday night of pro basketball betting and we walk into Thursday with a still stout 386-198 season record and our heads held high. We all get a bit of a breather tonight, too, as just four games grace the docket. That’s naturally prepping us for a rigorous Friday and Saturday run, but we’ll take our breaks when we can get them. Let’s dive right into our NBA picks for Thursday night and see if we can’t go 4-0:

Bucks @ Magic

Orlando took the game in the first meeting and will look to go up 2-0 in this season series with the Bucks. Milwaukee will of course have other plans, as they’re a much better team than they were to start the year. If Milwaukee sticks to their sound defense and can keep Victor Oladipo or Nikola Vucevic from exploding tonight, they’ll have a solid chance to top the Magic, who have dropped six straight games.

Pick: Bucks 104, Magic 102

Knicks @ Pacers

New York could win back to back games tonight if they can come into Indiana and shock the Pacers. They surprised us all by topping the Thunder last night, so anything seems possible. That’s extremely unlikely in general, but even more unlikely if Carmelo Anthony (knee, rest) takes this game off. He probably will, so look for the Pacers to get a nice home win and inch one step closer to the East’s 8th playoff seed.

Pick: Pacers 89, Knicks 87

Nuggets @ Grizzlies

Denver trounced the Grizzlies the last time they faced, but Memphis is at full strength this time around, as well as on their home floor. The Nuggets are still a dangerous offense that can run on anyone in any given night, but Memphis is likely to put the clamps down defensively to lock down a fifth straight victory.

Pick: Grizz 104, Nuggets 98

Bulls @ Lakers

Chicago could come into L.A. a little under-manned tonight if Jimmy Butler sits out a second straight game, but with everyone else at full health, it probably won’t matter. The Bulls are fresh off a huge road win over the Warriors and the last thing they’ll want to do is drop a gimme game to a bad Lakers team. Jordan Clarkson and Wayne Ellington stepped up for the Lake Show in their last game, but this is still a struggling team. Lakers fans can prepare for a 10th straight loss on Thursday night.

Pick: Bulls 109, Lakers 102
