Deontay Wilder vs. Luis Ortiz Odds and Prediction

WBC Heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder takes on challenger Luis Ortiz on March 3rd, 2018 at the Barclays Center in New York, USA.

The fight is of great significance as the winner could possible face unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in one of the biggest boxing bouts in years. The two were originally booked to fight in November of 2017 but the bout was postponed after Ortiz failed a drug test.

Wilder is undefeated in 39 bouts with 38 knockouts. He is coming off a November knockout of Bermane Stiverne. At 6-7 and with an 83 inch reach, Wilder is one of the game’s most feared punchers. His opponent is likewise known for his punching power. Ortiz is likewise unbeaten in 28 fights with 24 KOs. Ortiz is a 6-4 southpaw with an 84 inch reach.

Most Dangerous Fight

The lines have become wider since the bout was originally scheduled last November. Back then, the Bronze Bomber was a -185 while the Real King Kong came back at +150  when the betting lines opened. Currently, Wilder is a -350 at Bovada against Ortiz’s +265.

This is without doubt the most dangerous fight that Wilder has ever taken and give him props for taking it. While Ortiz is way up there in terms of age, his ring IQ and reach make him a very tough challenge for the American. That’s not even including his best asset which is his one punch knockout power.

Wilder is going to second guess once he feels the power of Ortiz. We’ve seen Wilder run right through all the opponents he’s faced so far but he’s going to fight one that could easily do the same to him. The main concern with Ortiz though is his cardio. If someone pushes the pace against him, this weakness may be exposed.

Making Ortiz Uncomfortable

The problem for Ortiz is that that someone could be Deontay Wilder. Wilder is young, fast and athletic. He can easily control the pace of the fight and the ring with his athleticism and size. Ortiz has been used to walking down his opponents but against a bigger foe like Wilder, he is going to be uncomfortable.

Wilder is no great tactician but he can take advantage of Ortiz’s cardio .The Bronze Bomber isn’t just going to make this a battle of haymakers. He is going to push the tempo and tire Ortiz. Sure, this fight can end in any round but given the importance of this bout with regards to the Joshua unification, both may play it safe early. Wilder is going to pump those jabs though and find his openings early. Ortiz is going to counterpunch well. But once he gets tired, Wilder is going to take over and win this fight.

We’re picking Deontay Wilder to win by knockout in the middle rounds.

Can Bermane Stiverne Beat Deontay Wilder This Time?

WBC Heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder will now defend his belt against the man he won it from – Canadian fighter Bermane Stiverne. Stiverne replaces the power punching Luis “King Kong” Ortiz who failed a drug test last week.

Stiverne was supposed to fight fellow contender Dominic Breazeale in the undercard. Instead he will now face Wilder in the main event of this Showtime event  on November 4th, 2017 at the Barclays Center in New York.

Rematch

Wilder and Stiverne met in 2015 under different circumstances. Stiverne was the champion and Wilder the challenger. The latter won the contest via unanimous decision and took the WBC belt home to Tuscaloosa , Alabama.  Wilder has since defended the belt successfully five times.

Wilder was supposed to fight Ortiz to silence  his detractors who have always criticized his level of competition. But the Cuban tested positive for two diuretic drugs chlorothiazide and hydrochlorothiazide, which are used to treat high blood pressure but which can be used as masking agents for steroids. Ortiz said it was used for the former but didn’t ask for medical exemption from VADA.

Size Advantage

Just as he was in their first bout, Wilder is the favorite here. The Bronze Bomber is a -700 against Stiverne who is at +425 for this rematch. We saw what Wilder did in the first bout. Wilder used his size advantage over Stiverne to dictate the fight from the outside.

Before their first bout, Wilder was 32-0 with 32 KOs and many people thought he was all about knocking people out. But against Stiverne, he used every inch of his 83 inch reach advantage to keep the hard hitting Canadian at bay. Wilder dominated the fight with his jab and continued to pepper Stiverne with big right hands. He won handily in the scorecards.

Can’t Get Going

Stiverne is a conservative counter puncher and he won’t win this fight fighting at a distance because he gives up too much size against Deontay Wilder. He has to take this fight close since his best punches are the compact hooks which he throws from the inside. To get inside though, he must take chances and risk getting hit by Wilder’s bombs.

Stiverne successfully avoided getting floored or knocked out in the first bout. However, he wasn’t able to get his offense going because he was busy fending off Wilder’s punches. We’re not saying that Stiverne has no shot at winning this because he does have power in both hands.

However, Wilder beat him two years ago, when the Bronze Bomber was a raw talent. With Wilder now smarter and more intelligent, an older Stiverne is in for all sorts of problems.

Prediction

It’s not Deontay Wilder’s fault that he will be fighting Bermane Stiverne. Luis Ortiz couldn’t do his part. Now Wilder says that Stiverne is  going to pay for Oritz’s miscues. Doesn’t get any worse for Bermane Stiverne.

We’re picking Deontay Wilder to win this fight. f there’s a man to beat Wider, it won’t be Stiverne.  He already knows what Stiverne brings to the table and he has improved so much in the last couple of years. So don’t be surprised if Wilder is going to win this one by knockout.

Deontay Wilder vs. Gerald Washington Odds And Prediction

WBC Heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder returns to action on February 25th, 2017 in his home state of Alabama.

The Bronze Bomber spent the second half of 2016 on the shelf after he suffered hand and biceps injury during his dominant victory over Chris Arreola in July of 2016. With his injuries fully healed, Wilder faces unbeaten challenger Gerald Washington at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama.

Another Replacement Opponent

Washington is the second consecutive replacement opponent that Wilder will be facing. Last July, Chris Arreola stepped in after Wilder’s original opponent Alexander Povetkin was pulled from the bout for testing positive for a banned substance.

Wilder’s original opponent for February 25th also failed a similar drug test. Andrzej Wawrzyk tested positive for the anabolic steroid stanozolol in two random drug tests administered by VADA in January hence he was stripped of his opportunity to fight Wilder.

Washington fought in the undercard of Wilder-Arreola and recorded a fourth round knockout of former title challenger Ray Austin. The US Navy veteran has a professional record of 18-0-1 with 12 KOs. The bout marks the first title fight for Washington and the fifth title defense for Wilder. It will be Washington’s second fight in Alabama while it will be the 9th bout for Wilder in his home state.

A Massive Favorite

Wilder is a massive favorite over Washington at -1400. The challenger is pegged at +700.

Like Wilder, Washington took up the sport at a late age. He made his pro debut in 2012 but is already 34 years old. Washington is perhaps one of the heavyweight who matches Wilder’s size. He’s 6-6 and has a reach of 82’ inches. On the other hand, the champion is slightly taller at 6-7 and longer at 83’. But given Washington’s length and punching power, he can be very dangerous is he’s able to land cleanly on Wilder.

But Washington is slower and has less technique than Wilder. He’s more of a free swinger who doesn’t have much defense. He bullies his opponents with his aggression and relies solely on his powerful right hand. Similarly, Wilder is a work in progress but he is far advanced in terms of skill and technique. Along with Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder is perceived to be the future of the heavyweight division. This should be a shootout and we expect Wilder to win by early knockout.
