Jets Top Wide Receiver Quincy Enunwa Out For Season

The New York Jets weren’t projected to be very good in 2017 and that was largely by design. After a borderline playoff team stumbled out of the gates and finished at the bottom of the AFC East in 2016, the front office decided to strip a competitive team and start over.

That led to the departure of a number of big name veterans, with Ryan Fitzpatrick fleeing to Tampa Bay and the team cutting ties with guys like Darrelle Revis, Nick Mangold, Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker. The loss of the latter two opened the door to a number one receiver role for Quincy Enunwa, which was slated to be one bright spot in a team building from the ground up.

Even that won’t work out as planned.

Big Loss

Per reports, Enunwa’s 2017 season is ending before it ever officially got going. New York’s would-be #1 wide receiver was originally expected to miss 6-9 weeks due to a bulging disc in his neck, but upon further review, the Jets opted to shut down their passing game’s top weapon for the entire year.

Enunwa reportedly suffered a neck injury during the team’s practice on Saturday night. Enunwa impressed in his third eason in 2016, racking up 857 yards and 4 touchdowns on 58 receptions. Primed for a huge role, Enunwa gives way to number two wide receiver Robby Anderson and it’s possible his playing career could be in doubt.

Next Man Up

There’s no denying the fact that the Jets were already strapped for talent and not expected to make much noise as a whole in 2017. Afer all, this is a team that is set to enter 2017 with absurd +30000 odds to make a run at Super Bowl 52.

Obviously that wasn’t happening before this injury, but Enunwa going down makes the Jets a weaker bet across the board. Enunwa’s injury also specifically hurts the passing game, which was going to be held back by shaky quarterback play to begin with, but also had to break in a new top target. They’ll have to do it again, with Robby Anderson likely ascending the ladder to be New York’s top target.

The trickle down effect only goes further, too, as the rebuilding Jets may have to turn to Charone Peake and ArDarius Stewart for bigger roles. That isn’t music to New York fan’s ears, but it’s the situation the Jets find themselves in.

Betting on Jets

Most people will brush this news off as a minor impact on 2017 NFL betting, but it actually takes the Jets from being a mild threat in some spots to being a total cakewalk for most opponents. That was probably going to be the case regardless, but you get the idea.

New York already looked like an impossible upset pick going into their week one showdown with the Buffalo Bills, but without their top receiver, a +7 spread feels insurmountable. Betting on the Jets beyond a weekly dart throw feels silly, too, as New York holds poor odds (+5000) to claim the AFC East. Of course, there is one bet we should see a lot more action on – New York’s projected win total.

That should be one of the top bets we chase at NFL betting sites like Bovada, considering it seems to be about as safe as it gets. The value isn’t through the roof (-200), but the Jets were 5-11 a year ago and seem to have gotten significantly worse. This bet only returns $250 for every $500 put up, but it’s one of many safe “grind it out” season bets we should be targeting. After all, even if the Jets get to 4-12, you still win if you bet the Under.

Betting talk aside, the loss of Enunwa is big and also quite unfortunate. New York had a budding star on their hands, and instead of watching him develop with the rest of their youth movement, they may have to worry about his career being derailed completely. It does mean good fortune for the receivers behind him, but ultimately this news should work against New York getting wins in 2017. As NFL betting enthusiasts, we should target Jets opponents moving forward – especially when the matchup presents serious value.

Patriots Extend Star Wide Receiver Julian Edelman

The New England Patriots keep finding ways to get better. After winning Super Bowl 51 and adding numerous upgrades at various positions during the offseason, the Patriots got better from within on Thursday, when news broke of an extension agreement with star wide receiver, Julian Edelman.

New England had been working to lock up Edelman, 31, who has proven to be one of the best slot wide receivers in the NFL. The two sides finally hammered out a long-term contract extension, which per ESPN‘s Adam Schefter will keep him with the team through the 2019 NFL season:

Rich Get Richer

The Pats stormed back from a 28-3 hole to win their fifth NFL title last season, so no matter what they do going into 2017, they’ll feel like they’re ahead of the pack. That’s easier to say after the team sprung a big trade to land former New Orleans Saints speedster Brandin Cooks, while handing Edelman an extension guarantees Tom Brady will have a loaded passing attack for the next few years.

Edelman merely beefs up a huge strength for New England, as their wide receiving corps has gotten so loaded that solid veteran slot man Danny Amendola is on the roster bubble heading into training camp. Regardless of what happens with Amendola, the Pats remain stacked at wide receiver and keeping one of the best in the business at working the slot makes sure they won’t experience a dip at the position.

New England rewards players that live up to the hype and can return solid value and Edelman has been doing that for years. The converted Kent State quarterback racked up 98 receptions in a full 16-game season in 2016 and has topped 92+ receptions three different times since being drafted in 2009. Edelman will undoubtedly eye a fourth run at 92+ catches and will also hope to stay healthy after missing nine total games between the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

Team to Beat?

New England extending Julian Edelman is just par for the course for what looks to be the best team in the NFL going into 2017. The Patriots went 14-2 and won Super Bowl 51 last year and nothing they’ve done since then suggests they can’t do something similar in 2017. Vegas certainly seems to agree, as the Pats enter the new season with the best chance (+375 odds at Bovada) to win it all again.

Locking up Edelman doesn’t add anything extra to New England’s 2017 Super Bowl hopes, but it does take away the potential distraction of contract talks. It also helps keep the Patriots in the conversation for title talks beyond this year. For Edelman, it’s appreciation for a job well done and security as he hopes to close out his playing career with the only franchise he’s ever known.

Can Knile Davis Trade Spark Dormant Packers Offense?

The Green Bay Packers just did something they normally haven’t done during the Ted Thompson era: they looked outside their own walls for help. More specifically, the Packers went to the trade market to better themselves, officially agreeing to a deal with the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday to add backup running back, Knile Davis.

Hit by a rash of injuries in their offensive backfield, Green Bay was forced to use a wide receiver at the running back position in week six and the end result was a lopsided home loss to the Dallas Cowboys. With starting running back Eddie Lacy (ankle) ailing and backup rusher James Starks (knee) slated to miss up to a month of action, Green Bay had two options: to continue as they were, or seek some outside help.

Necessary Trade

Thompson and co. wisely opted to swing a trade for Davis, who was wasting away in Kansas City.

The harsh reality is that Green Bay has been in an arguable offensive funk all season, and at 3-2 it may be time to start wondering why they’re struggling. Some point to the offensive line, a lack of speed at wide receiver or Aaron Rodgers’ regression, but not having a healthy stable of running backs is understandably part of the problem.

Lacy isn’t 100%, but even beyond Green Bay’s top rusher, there were major struggles. Starks had been averaging a meager 1.8 yards per carry ahead of his knee injury, and the Packers’ running back depth chart was so bad that the team rolled into week six with Ty Montgomery and Randall Cobb (two wide receivers) seeing added time as running backs.

That simply isn’t a way to conduct business in the NFL, naturally facilitating a much-needed trade for Knile Davis.

Boost in the Backfield?

The trade for Knile Davis seems a bit underwhelming at first glance. Of Kansas City’s available running back talent, any of Jamaal Charles, Spencer Ware or Charcandrick West would have been much more appealing. All three are highly versatile weapons with well-rounded skill-sets and are all also arguably more explosive than Davis.

That isn’t to say Knile Davis can’t be a strong addition to the Packers, however. In fact, he actually looked quite good in spurts for the Chiefs just a couple of years ago:

At the very worst, he’s added depth, which the team sorely needed with Starks on the shelf for the next four weeks, at a minimum. Davis has experience in short yardage situations, on kick returns and while he’s had some issues with ball control and consistency, he absolutely brings size, speed and experience to the table.

There was even a time where the Chiefs thought Davis could be their top backup behind Charles, when he temporarily was on a roll during a 2014 season that saw him pile on over 600 total yards and seven touchdowns.

It’s fair to wonder if Davis is as washed up as he’s appeared to be in Kansas City, but the 25-year old could still have some untapped upside. Regardless, there is little doubt a change of scenery and an ehanced role may offer him the chance to turn his career around.

Empty Returns

While Knile Davis at one time displayed appealing talent, he’s not a guy that is going to make people miss, he showed steep regression as a runner with the Chiefs over the last two years and he’s had a history of fumbling woes.

On paper, this is a less that inspiring trade and it’s fair to wonder if the Packers could have made a stronger play. It’s possible they didn’t want to step on the toes of Lacy or Starks and merely picked up some depth in Davis, but they arguably should have taken the situation a lot more seriously and attempted to land a true difference-maker.

The reality is Green Bay lacks speed and versatility all over their offense and probably in their backfield, more than anywhere else. Eddie Lacy can still be a productive starter, but he’s not healthy and it’s arguable that an effective change of pace back would do Green Bay’s offense wonders.

Davis probably isn’t going to provide that.

Needless to say, Green Bay’s offense is slowly sinking and going into a short-week showdown with the Chicago Bears on Thursday Night Football, they have massive question marks in their running game. Adding Knile Davis doesn’t change that.

The Packers started the 2016 NFL season with the second best Super Bowl odds. They’ve since slid over at Bovada (5th best odds, +1200). Entering week seven in what figures to be a must-win home game against a bad Bears team, Green Bay could be losing steam as a popular Super Bowl pick if they can’t find a way to get their offense back into high gear.
