2019-20 NFL Most Regular Season Passing Touchdowns Preview

Peyton Manning threw a record 55 touchdowns during the 2013 NFL season to break the previous mark of 50 touchdowns set by Tom Brady in 2007. At that time, only Manning and Brady were the only NFL quarterbacks to throw at least 50 touchdowns in a single season. Enter Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes burst into superstardom last season when he threw for 50 touchdowns last season en route to winning the 2019 NFL MVP award. Mahomes was so good last season that he is the current betting favorite to lead the league in touchdowns again next season.

Here are the odds to lead the NFL in passing touchdowns during the 2019-20 NFL season:

Player Odds
Patrick Mahomes +400
Matt Ryan +400
Andrew Luck +400
Aaron Rodgers +650
Ben Roethlisberger +750
Baker Mayfield +1200
Drew Brees +1200
Jameis Winston +1500
Jared Goff +1600
Phillip Rivers +2000
Tom Brady +2500
Carson Wentz +3300
Kirk Cousins +3300
DeShaun Watson +5000
Jimmy Garropolo +5000
Kyler Murray +5000

Who Are The Favorites?

Patrick Mahomes had an electrifying 2018-19 season where he completed 380 out of 580 passes for 5,097 passing yards with 50 passing touchdowns to lead the NFL. While the Chiefs didn’t win the Super Bowl, Mahomes was named as the 2019 NFL MVP for his efforts.

12 of Mahomes’ 50 touchdowns were caught by Tyreek Hill. At first, it appeared that Hill’s off-field behavior would keep him off the Chiefs’ roster this season but that doesn’t look the case. With Hill back, Mahomes has his best receiver back. Tight end Travis Kelce will also be back for Mahomes. Kelce led his position with 10 touchdowns and 1,336 receiving yards last season. So with Hill, Kelce and Sammy Watkins returning to Kansas City, there is no question why Patrick Mahomes is the NFL betting favorite to lead the NFL in passing TDs next season.

Matt Ryan had more touchdowns that years in his age last season. The 34-year old quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons had 35 passing touchdowns last season while throwing for 4,924 passing yards on 422-608 accuracy or 69.4%. Ryan has a rebuilt offensive line protecting him this season and he should be safer next season than he was last year when he was sacked 42 times. Guard James Carpenter plus rookies Chris Lindstrom and Kaleb McGary should make Ryan safe in the pocket this coming season and that should improve his passing numbers. Likewise, the return to full health of Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley should help Ryan as well.

Andrew Luck and his Indianapolis Colts were bested by the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes in the air after the latter had a magical season. But to expect Mahomes and company to keep their 2019 pace would be wishful thinking. That said, Luck should have another excellent season after throwing for 39 touchdowns on 430-639 passing or 67.3% accuracy and a total of 4,593 passing yards. Not only will Luck have T.Y Hilton back, but he will also have Devin Funchess to throw the ball to next season. Funchess caught 44 balls for 549 yards and four touchdowns last season for the Panthers.

Aaron Rodgers ranked 6th among his peers in production last season despite the fact that the 35-year-old former the former All-Pro Super Bowl champion, MVP, league MVP and Pro Bowler had plenty of health issues the last time out. As he’s become older, Rodgers has become less active in the pocket and that has impacted his output in recent years. Despite his decline, Rodgers threw for 25 touchdowns last season for a total of 4,442 passing yards. However, the Green Bay offense ranked 12th last season and given that they didn’t make too many changes this summer, it’s hard to think Rodgers can do any better, not especially with his health issues.

Ben Roethlisberger threw for 34 passing touchdowns on 452-675 passing or 67.0% with a total of 5,129 passing yards. Brown led the league in passing yards last season, thanks to the wide receiver known as Antonio Brown. Bad news for Pittsburgh though because Brown will be playing for another team next season. That should impact Big Ben’s numbers big time as well. Roethlisberger will still have Juju Smith-Schuster and the newly signed Donte Moncrief to help his passing numbers next season.

Baker Mayfield is no question Cleveland’s messiah and bigger things are expected from him in his second NFL season. Last year, Mayfield threw for 27 touchdowns on 310-486 passing or 63.8% for a total of 3,725 passing yards. One of the reasons why Mayfield is high on this list is the arrival of All-Pro receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Add the fact that he has Jarvis Landry, David Njoku, Duke Johnson and Kareem Hunt ( for their last 8 games ).

Who Will Be The NFL’s Passing TD leader?

I like the fact that Patrick Mahomes is getting his weapons back this season but given how many touchdowns he scored last season, I don’t think Mahomes and company can replicate last season because it was a magical season that doesn’t come along every day. Matt Ryan will have a healthier team and a better offensive line while Andrew Luck has his targets returning plus a new one. I’m not sure if Rodgers and/or Roethlisberger will get better with age.

I like Baker Mayfield because he is coming off a sensational rookie season and now he is eager to prove that he can lead the Browns to the postseason. The arrival of OBJ got me into picking Mayfield because he is an elite receiver who can definitely help Mayfield’s numbers. I’m expecting a playoffs season for the Browns and a special season for Baker Mayfield. Prediction: Baker Mayfield
