2019 Heisman Trophy Winner Odds, Preview, and Prediction

The Heisman Trophy or the Heisman Memorial Trophy is awarded every year to an NCAA Football Player. The award is presented by the Heisman Trophy Trust in early December of each year before the bowl games.

As it is an individual award, the Heisman Trophy winner must have impressive statistics during the year. But aside from personal statistics, team success also plays a big part in the voting process. A Heisman winner must represent a team that had outstanding success during the season and one which is in contention for the national title or a major conference championship at some point in the particular season. The winner is voted upon by the media, former Heisman winners and the fans. The award will be given at the PlayStation Theater in Times Square, Manhattan.

Last year, Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray won the award. Murray went on to become the #1 overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals. This year, a handful of familiar collegiate names are in the list of the early favorites to win this December award.

Here are the odds to win the 2019 Heisman Trophy. Odds taken from Mybookie.ag as of 5/15/19:

It’s no surprise that Tua Tagovailoa is the football betting favorite to win the 2019 Heisman Trophy.  He was a heavy favorite in the 2018 Heisman Trophy race up until the conference championship weekend. Heading to his third year, Tagovailoa has his sights on a second national title and the 2018 First team All-American heads to the upcoming season with serious NFL draft hype.  The 21-year old from Hawaii is surrounded by some of the best skilled players in the nation and with all the weapons he has in Alabama including fellow Heisman hopeful Jerry Jeudy, Tagovailoa is going to be the man to beat for the 2019 Heisman Trophy.

Trevor Lawrence entered his freshman year already with Heisman hype. And after the former #1 overall recruit accomplished what he did last season, there is no doubt that he is going to be one of the top contenders to win the 2019 Heisman Trophy. Lawrence had 30 touchdowns to just four picks during his true freshman season. He led Clemson to a historic and unbeaten 15-0 season. He was the star of the National Championship and with Clemson likely the favorites to win the title again in 2019, Lawrence has a good shot at making it to New York.

Jalen Hurts gave his all for three seasons in Alabama, finishing his career with the Crimson Tide with 5,626 yards and 48 passing touchdowns on top of his 5.2 yards per carry and 23 rushing touchdowns scored. Last January, Hurts announced that he would play his final year of eligibility with the Oklahoma Sooners. Given his resume and the fact that the past two starters in Oklahoma were Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray, then it’s not crazy to think that Hurts would win the Heisman here with Lincoln Riley.

Justin Fields is expected to follow Dwayne Haskins footsteps in his first year as starter under Ryan Day. Haskins broke all kinds of records in his one full season with Ohio State and finished third in the Heisman balloting. That’s the kind of expectation on Fields as the sophomore steps into Haskins old job. Considering that Fields has a running component to his game that Haskins didn’t, it’s fine to expect that he could exceed what his predecessor did. Fields should be in for a big year in 2019 and if Ohio State wins another Big Ten Championship, he could be the first Buckeye since Troy Smith to take home the Heisman Trophy.

Adrian Martinez had a strong first season in Nebraska under Scott Frost but putting him high up in the oddsboard for the 2019 Heisman Trophy Winner should also translate to the Cornhuskers at least doubling their performance from last season which was just 4-8. With the likes of Wandale Robinson, he gets new weapons to use this coming season and with more experience under Frost’s system, no question big things are expected of Adrian Martinez in 2019.

Tee Higgins was one of Clemson’s top weapons in their 2018 championship season. The 6-4 wide receiver from Oak Ridge, Tennessee led Clemson with  59 receptions for 936 receiving yards with 12 touchdown passes caught in 2018. Higgins earned 2nd All Atlantic Coast Conference honors last year and given his combination of speed and towering size to stretch defenses, he is expected to even have a better third season in 2019, making him one of the early favorites to win the 2019 Heisman Trophy.

Jake Fromm took over from Jacob Eason and held-off Justin Fields in a talented Georgia quarterback room in a span of two years. Now he gets a chance to really take off ig Georgia gives him the right amount of weapons to succeed. He has a 25-4 record as a starter and has a total of 54 career scores compared to just 13 picks. And yes, he’s among the 2020 NFL Draft’s top quarterbacks to watch.

By returning for his senior season, Justin Herbert saw his name return to the list of Heisman favorites this year. Herbert threw for 3,151 yards with 29 passing touchdowns and only 8 interceptions last season. More importantly, he proved that he can stay healthy after having injury concerns during his first and second seasons. The Ducks have momentum after the last recruiting cycle and if Ducks get enough wins next season, then Herbert could be in for a special year.

Who Wins?

I mean it’s too early to tell really and we don’t know which teams are going to provide their star quarterbacks with the right amount of weapons needed to make a run at the Heisman Trophy. Team success is also another factor and with the season yet to start, we’ll have to see which teams succeed. But if we base our predictions on last season’s performances, I think the 2019 Heisman Trophy race is between Tua Tagovailoa and Trevor Lawrence. Both stood out last season and were already to win the award last year. I think Tagovailoa has a slight edge because he is more versatile and dynamic as an athlete. So yeah, for now I will go with the favorite Tua Tagovailoa but I think others will emerge as the season begins.
