The Houston Astros head to Yankee Stadium for Game 3 of the 2019 American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees.
After getting blanked on Saturday in Game 1 of the series, the Astros pulled through with a marathon 3-2 win after 11 innings to tie the 2019 ALCS series at one win apiece. The Yankees won Game 1 with a score of 7-0 and had their chances to leave Houston with a 2-0 series lead. But Alex Correa delivered in Game 2 with one home run and two RBIs.
Gerritt Cole will open on top of the mound for the Astros in Game 3. Cole was 20-5 with an ERA of 2.50 on the season. Cole gave up three earned runs in seven innings against the Yankees this season. In his last start, Cole allowed one earned run in eight innings pitched against the Tampa Bay Rays in the previous round.
The New York Yankees could’ve easily gotten a 2-0 lead over the Astros but instead, they leave Houston with a 1-1 split. The Yankees now head home for Games 3,4 and 5 and they hope to regroup and refocus as they look to take command of the 2019 ALCS. Aaron Judge had a big game 2 with one home run and 2 RBIs but his efforts went for naught as the Astros won.
Luis Severino will open on top of the mound for the Yankees in Game 3. Severino was 1-1 with an ERA of 1.50 during a regular season shortened by injuries. Severino didn’t start a game versus the Astros this season but in 2018 he was 2-0 with an ERA of 1.13 against Houston. In his last start against the Minnesota Twins, Severino pitched four scoreless innings with four strikeouts.
Houston is 15-5 SU in their last 20 games played. The Astros are 3-2 SU in their last five games played on the road. New York is 4-1 SU in their last five games played. The Yankees are 5-1 ATS in their last six games played at home. Head to head, the Yankees are 4-2 SU in their last six games against the Astros. New York is also 5-1 SU in their last six home games against Houston.
The Yankees are going home to Yankee Stadium where their bats have been noisy this season and where they have dominated the Astros. But the Astros are the MLB betting favorites here as they are putting Gerritt Cole on the mound. Cole has been terrific since May. Houston clearly has the pitching advantage with Cole matched up against Severino. The latter has been good since his return and he should be able to keep the Yankees in the thick of the fight here. However, facing Cole may be a tough task for New York as the Astros’ ace is unbeaten in his last 24 starts including two postseason games. Cole is pitching on full rest and is very good down the stretch as well. I like the Houston Astros to pick up the win behind another stellar pitching job by Gerritt Cole. Prediction: Houston Astros
The total has gone under in four out of the last six games played by the Astros. The under is also 11-4 in Houston’s last 15 games played on the road and the under is also 4-2 in their last six American League opponents. The total has gone under in four out of the last six games played by the Yankees. The under is 4-2 in New York’s last six games against the American League and the under is also 13-5 in their last 18 games against the American League West division. Head to head, the under is 2-1 in the last three meetings between these two teams.

Cole has been terrific since May as he has won his last 16 decisions during the regular season. He then had two wins over Tampa Bay in the AL Division Series to help Houston advance to the ALCS. On the other hand, Severino almost missed the entire season with oblique and shoulder injuries. He returned late in the season and posted a 1-1 record with an ERA of 1.50.
The under is 3-0-1 in the Astros’ last four games against a team with a winning record and 3-0-1 in their last four playoff games played. The under is 4-1 in the Yankees’ last 5 League Championship games and 19-6-1 in their last 26 games after an off day. Cole has the ability to shut down opponents while the Yankees also have that ability while riding on different arms. Prediction: Under 7.5
