The Boston Red Sox continue their opening set against the Seattle Mariners on Friday at the T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington.
In the opening game of the series, Domingo Santana waxed hot, drilling three hits with four RBIs and two runs scored with a home run, to lead the Mariners to a 12-4 win over the Red Sox on opening day.
Nathan Eovaldi gets the call to open on top of the hill for the defending World Series champions. The 29-year old right hander started 21 games last season and finished with a record of 6-7 with an ERA of 3.81 and a WHIP of 1.18. Eovaldi gave up a total of 55 runs on 105 hits and 14 home runs while walking 20 and fanning 101 batters.

He gave up two runs on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts in 4.2 innings of pitch work but did not factor in the decision.

The Red Sox are 20-7 in their last 27 games against left-handed starters and Boston is 68-31 in their last 99 games overall. You can say what you want about Eovaldi but he finished the season strong, allowing just one earned run in a total of 9.1 innings pitched during his last four games pitched. Kikuchi played good in his debut, but the jury is still out on him. I’ll back the veteran and proven Eovaldi here. Prediction: Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox were 103-73 ATS last season and Boston was 54-35 ATS in 89 road games played last season. The Mariners are 3-0 ATS in three games played so far this season, winning their lone game at home yesterday against the Red Sox.

Prior to Thursday’s game, the Red Sox had beaten the Mariners by an average of 3.5 runs per game in their last four wins over Seattle. Boston has also outscored their opponents 24-3 in Eovaldi’s last two games pitched. I’m not sure how Kikuchi will do in his home pitching debut and I don’t want to wait to find out. Eovaldi finished the season strong and I think it will be his experience and not Kikuchi’s lack thereof that’s going to be key here. Prediction: Red Sox -1.5
The over was 85-80-1 during Boston’s 2018 season. The over was also 54-35 in the Red Sox’s 89 road games last season. The Mariners have seen the total go over in two games against right handed pitchers. These teams combined to score 16 points on opening day but it remains to be seen if Seattle can keep the scoring up.

The under is 5-2 in Boston’s last seven road games against left-handers. The total has gone under in four out of the last five games of Seattle versus right handed starters, The under is also 4-0 in the Mariners’ last four games versus the American League East. Sure, these teams combined for 16 on Thursday but most of it was Domingo Santana who had a great game. It’s still March and the pitchers are still better than hitters during the start of the season. Prediction: Under 8
