Who Are The Favorites?

Bayern Munich opened as big soccer betting favorites to win the 2019-20 season of Bundesliga at -425. That’s not a surprise, considering the German football club has won the last seven installments of the Bundesliga. 2018 wasn’t an easy win as the season came down to the final day but when it was over, the results were the same and Bayern Munich was champion for the 7th straight season.

Last year, Bayern Munich suffered four consecutive home losses which tied a record for the franchise. The only other time that Bayern lost four in a row in the Bundesliga was from April-September 1994 and from September-October 1996. Despite their struggles last season, they were still able to win the big games that mattered and walk home with their seventh straight Bundesliga title.

Before Bayern made this remarkable run, remember that Dortmund won back to back titles in 2010-11 and 2011-12. During Bayern’s winning run, Dortmund had four second-place finishes including 2018. Last season, Dortmund pushed Bayern like never before during this winning run. They started the season fast and even opened a seven-point lead over Bayern during the early stage of the season. We know how it ended. As for Dortmund, they sold Christian Pulisic to Chelsea and acquired Julian Brandt from Bayern Leverkusen and Thorgan Hazard of Monchengladbach.

RG Leipzig is one of four teams to finish behind Bayern during their seven-year term, achieving the feat in 2016-17. Last season RG Leipzig finished in third place with a total of 66 points, thereby qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. Last April 23, RZ Leipzig made it to the final of the DFB-Pokal for the first time. They faced Bayern Munich and lost the match 0-3.

Who Wins?

It’s hard not to bet on a team that has won seven consecutive league titles. That’s what we have in Bayern Munich. But if you think that age is going to catch up with this great team after dominating the league for so long now, that is not the case with this team. The German outfit has already transitioned from older players like Frank Ribery and Arjen Robben to young guns like Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman. With enough resources to make a splash this summer, Bayern is expected to add more firepower before the start of the season. Die Roten was eyeing Manchester City’s Leroy Sane but with the feasibility of that transaction decreasing by the day, they are said to be interested in acquiring Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele instead. Regardless of who, Bayern should get even better after using up their extra resources.

The 5-0 drubbing of Dortmund by Bayern last April sent a strong message. Bayern had a rough 2018 but that didn’t mean they no longer have the fire to compete. They merely needed a big challenge and motivation. When they got that, they just turned on the switch and won the Bundesliga title again.

Dortmund has made some good moves including the acquisition of Julian Brandt and Thorgan Hazard. I’m not sure if those moves are going to be enough to topple Bayern’s rule. Let’s not talk about the other teams right now. The odds tell us this is a two-way street right now. I’m still waiting for Bayern’s move before making my final pick. But right now, based on what’s happened so far around the league, I think Bayern Munich is still going to be the team to beat in 2019-20.
