The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets continue their current series with Game 2 on Wednesday at CitiField.

Los Angeles has the best record in baseball and at 90-38, they have a massive 19.5-game lead over the San Diego Padres in the NL West Division. The Dodgers also have a 9 game lead over the Mets in the League standings. L.A. has won 8 out of their last 10 games played including their most recent three games.

New York is the division leader in the NL East but is just three games up on the defending World Series champions Atlanta Braves. The Mets also have the second-best record in the League standings but they are just 5-5 in their last 10 games while losing their last two assignments, including Game 1 against the Dodgers on Tuesday night.

With Tuesday’s win, the Dodgers improved to 3-2 against the Mets this season.

Baseball Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers are the best team in baseball and they have gone off after the All-Star break. Los Angeles has dominated with great pitching and an explosive offense. They have lost just twice in their last 10 games played and head to this game after beating the Marlins twice and the Mets on Tuesday.

Mookie Betts is having a fantastic season with 31 home runs and a .910 OPS. Betts has been red hot as of late with four home runs in their last seven games played. Overall, Los Angeles has produced an OPS of 0.910 in the last 15 days which ranks only second to the St. Louis Cardinals’ .919 during that stretch.

Left-hander Tyler Anderson will open on top of the mound for the Dodgers. Anderson is 13-2 with an ERA of 2.69 and a WHIP of 1.02 with 111 strikeouts and 30 walks. He is 1-1 with an ERA of 1.78 in his last five starts and is 1-0 versus the Mets this season, allowing three hits in six scoreless innings.

Baseball New York Mets

The Mets have done very well in their first season under Buck Showalter running the team and adding free agents to bolster the talent on the team. They are currently the NL East leaders by three games and are second behind the Dodgers in the NL standings. However, they have split their last 10 games played.

Pete Alonso has been one of the best hitters in baseball this season as he has hit 31 home runs with 105 RBIs with an OPS of .866. The Mets’ offense has been quiet as of late as they have averaged 4.3 runs per game with a batting average of .243 as a team over their last 10 games played.

Jacob deGrom is 3-1 with an ERA of 2.15 and a WHIP of 0.55 with 46 strikeouts and only two walks allowed this season. deGrom has allowed only 14 hits in 29.1 innings pitched this season which is impressive since he is coming off an injury. Due to the injury, he has yet to face the Dodgers this season.

I think that this game comes down to how long the Mets will go with deGrom. The Mets have been careful with him since his return, keeping him in the 75 pitch count mark in his first three starts back. DeGrom has not gone past 95 pitches this season and has gone 7 innings only once. However, when he’s on the mound, he’s still one of the best pitchers in the game.

In his last three starts, deGrom is 2-1 while allowing only four earned runs in a total of 18.2 innings pitched with 10 hits and one walk during that span. Tyler Anderson has allowed only two earned runs in 12.1 innings pitched over his last two starts with eight hits and five walks.

Given that the Mets need to win this game to keep their division lead, I think they will try to push deGrom more on Wednesday and probably let him go seven innings where Edwin Diaz can take over and do his thing.

The Dodgers have the best record in baseball while the Mets are 43-20 at home this season. Los Angeles is just coasting right now while New York still needs to win to keep their lead in the NL East.

These teams have split their four head-to-head games this season with the Dodgers owning a slight 16-15 lead in total runs scored before this current series. With the Mets’ ability to match the Dodgers’ offensive firepower, I expect a tight game here with deGrom and Diaz carrying the Mets to a key victory.

These are two teams that are in the Top 5 in scoring this season. However, they have averaged just 7.8 runs per game in their last 10 head-to-head meetings and this is a matchup between two of the best pitchers out there today.

Anderson ha a sub 2.00 ERA in his last five starts while deGrom’s ERA is just above 2.00 in his five starts this season. Both teams also have excellent bullpens, especially the Dodgers while the Mets have one of the best closers in Diaz. I think this will be a game that will be dictated by pitching more than scoring.

Prediction: Under 8.5
