The Charlotte Hornets hit the road to take on the New York Knicks at the fabled Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night.
Both Charlotte and New York are 2-1 SU on the season. The Hornets blew out the Atlanta Hawks in their previous game, doing so without LaMelo Ball and Terry Rozier. Meanwhile, the Knicks lost to the Grizzlies in their first game of the year. They have since bounced back with wins against the Detroit Pistons and Orlando Magic.
Charlotte has beaten New York seven times in their last 10 meetings including a 125-114 road win in their most recent game last March 30, 2022.
The Hornets were 43-39 SU overall and 27-25 SU against the Eastern Conference last season. Charlotte finished 10th overall in the Eastern Conference and lost to the Atlanta Hawks in the play-in tournament.
Charlotte opened the season with a blowout of the San Antonio Spurs. After losing to the Pelicans in their second game of the year, the Hornets blew out the Atlanta Hawks 126-109 in their most recent game with Kelly Oubre Jr. leading the way with 24 points.
Oubre needs to step up again as the Hornets will be without their two main scorers in LaMelo Ball and Terry Rozier. Nick Richards, PJ Washington, and Dennis Smith Jr. have also played well this season and are averaging double-digit scoring.
The Knicks were 37-45 SU overall last season and 22-30 against the Eastern Conference. New York missed the playoffs last year and they have made only one postseason appearance in the last 9 campaigns.
New York fought well before losing to Ja Morant and the Grizzlies 115-112 in their opening game. They have since picked up wins over the Detroit Pistons and Orlando Magic. In those two wins, the Knick defense has allowed only 104 points per game.
Julius Randle led the Knicks the last time out with 25 points and 12 rebounds while Jalen Brunson added 21 points and 6 assists. R.J. Barrett added 20 points while Mitchell Robinson had 14 points and six blocked shots.
The Hornets are 7-3 SU in their last 10 games played against the Knicks. Charlotte is however just 4-6 SU in their last 10 games played in New York.

New York Knicks SU trends:
The Hornets are coming off an impressive win over the Atlanta Hawks, in a game where they were 10-point underdogs. Charlotte pulled off the win even while playing without LaMelo Ball and Terry Rozier. Kelly Oubre Jr. had a big night with 24 points while Nick Richards had 20 points and Dennis Smith J. added 18 points.
Richards has averaged 19.5 points per game in the Hornets’ two wins this season so he’s been pretty much the difference-maker for his team so far this season. Smith meanwhile, has produced three double-digit scoring games this year but is averaging 13.3 points per game this season.
Meanwhile, Julius Randle has been the main protagonist for the Knicks, leading the team in scoring and rebounding at 21.3 points per game and 9.7 rebounds per game this season. Jalen Brunson has been pretty efficient at 17.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 7.0 assists per game while also committing just 1 turnover per contest.
The Knicks have conceded just 106.33 points per game in their first three games of the 2022-23 season and Mitchell Robinson has been excellent on defense at 2.3 blocks per contest. On the other hand, five Knicks players are averaging at least 1.0 steals per game this season.
I think this is a pretty good matchup and while the Hornets are coming off a big win over the Atlanta Hawks, they did so with a couple of role players playing big games. I don’t expect a second straight 20-point game for Nick Richards. The Knicks have the more proven scorers in Randle and Brunson. New York is also playing at home, where they are 2-0 so far. I’m going with the home team here.
Prediction: New York Knicks
The Hornets are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games played against the Knicks. Charlotte is however 4-6 ATS in their last 10 games played at Madison Square Garden.

Both these teams currently sport a 2-1 SU record. However, the Hornets head to this game coming off a big win over the Atlanta Hawks. Meanwhile, the Knicks’ victories have been against the Detroit Pistons and Orlando Magic. When New York played Memphis, they gave a good fight but lost to the better team.
When you look at these two teams, you can make an argument for both when it comes to who is better. What is clear however is that Charlotte doesn’t have its two best players in LaMelo Ball and Terry Rozier. Sure, Kelly Oubre stepped up big time the last time out against the Hawks. But it was Nick Richards and Dennis Smith Jr. whose scoring made the difference.
No disrespect to both but I don’t expect Smith Jr. and Richards to carry over their strong play in this next game. Oubre should be a problem for the Knicks but without Rozier and Ball, it’s going to be hard to win on the road this time around.
The Knicks rely heavily on Randle and Brunson but looking at the Charlotte lineup, it will be difficult for the Hornets to stop both Randle and Brunson without a defensive stopper. Oubre can play good defense but Charlotte can’t sacrifice his scoring ability to have him play defense.
This should be a competitive game but in the end, I think that the Knicks, with their two best players playing on Wednesday will be able to pull this one off. The Hornets are also in the middle of a three-game road trip and could be looking tired right now. I’m picking the home team to win this game.
Prediction: New York Knicks
The total has gone under in six out of the last 10 games played between these two teams. The over is 20-7-1 ATS in the last 28 games played in New York.

The Knicks are playing good defense this season as they have allowed an average of 106.33 points per game after three games played. However, two of those games were against the Detroit Pistons and Orland Magic who are obviously weaker competition.
Meanwhile, the Hornets are an undersized team with good shooting. They like to play small ball and they like to play a fast-tempo game. Charlotte has scored at least 112 points in each of their three games played They are putting up 122.3 points per game this season and have scored over 124 points twice. Give me these teams to hit the over.
