Hughie Fury vs Alexander Povetkin 8/31/19 Boxing Pick

British heavyweight Hughie Fury will take on former WBA champion Alexander Povetkin in the undercard of Lomachenko-Campbell on August 31, 2019, at the O2 Arena in London.

Hughie Fury

Hughie Fury is the cousin of lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. The 24-year old from Stockport in Greater Manchester in England once challenged for the WBO heavyweight title and lost to Joseph Parker.  Fury was once the WBO intercontinental heavyweight champion.

Fury stands 6-6 and has a massive reach of 80 inches while fighting as an orthodox fighter. He has a record of 23-2 with 15 knockouts to his credit. In his last bout, Fury scored a 7th round TKO win over Samuel Peter in Saudi Arabia. It was his second straight win after losing on points to Kubrat Pulev in Bulgaria last October 2018.

Alexander Povetkin

Alexander Povetkin is the former WBA (regular) heavyweight champion. As an amateur, he won gold medals at the 2003 World Championships and the 2004 Olympic games. He also won back to back gold medals at the European Championships. Pulev suffered his first career defeat when he challenged Wladimir Klitschko for the unified heavyweight title.

Povetkin is 39 years old and he has a record of 34-2 with 24 knockouts while fighting as an orthodox fighter. He stands 6-2 tall and has a reach of 75 inches. Povetkin has left many big fights on the table due to drug suspensions. He is coming off a knockout loss against Anthony Joshua on September 2018.

Who Wins?

Hughie Fury enters this bout as the boxing betting underdog against the former world champion. Fury has fought twice at the elite level and he lost both times. He boxed well against Joseph Parker but could not get to his opponent and score enough punches to win rounds. Against Kubrat Pulev, it was worse. Fury got off to a good start but after he got cut, it was all Pulev except for Round 8 when Fury hurt him. Overall, he was off. Pulev backed him up and Fury couldn’t get off shots on Pulev.

Povetkin is a veteran who had a very good amateur career. He’s beaten the likes of Byrd, Chambers, Huck, and Takam. He did, however, lose by a wide margin against Wladimir Klitschko and in his last fight, he was knocked out by Anthony Joshua. Povetkin did fight Joshua well but not enough. He was stunned by a right hand he didn’t see and could not recover.

Povetkin is 39 years old and although he doesn’t have too many miles yet, he took damage in his last fight and has been in many wars. On the other hand, Fury is only 24 and not even in his prime. However, he doesn’t have the kind of resume that would make you go head over heels with him. He has been more active though and against an aging veteran who hasn’t fought as much, that is going to be an advantage you can’t ignore.

Fury didn’t look impressive against Peter and he was even worse against Pulev. He has some power but against Povetkin, the latter is more powerful. Fury hasn’t faced a heavy puncher like Povetkin and his chin will be tested in this fight.  Povetkin is also the more experienced fighter and to me is better than Fury, technically. But he’s not fought in a while and that could be an advantage for Fury early on. But as the fight progresses, I think Povetkin will find his groove and start to dominate Fury.  I think this is going to be a good and tough fight and the veteran Povetkin wins it. Prediction: Alexander Povetkin
