The Utah Jazz will try to end a two-game losing streak when they hit the road and face the Detroit Pistons at the Little Caesars Arena on Monday night.
Utah is 28-12 SU on the season and they are the no. 1 team in the Northwest Division and have the 4th best record in the entire NBA. If the playoffs began today, the Jazz would be the third seed in the Western Conference. Utah enters this game having lost back-to-back games to the Toronto Raptors and Indiana Pacers but overall, they are 7-3 SU in their last 10 games played.
Detroit is 8-30 SU on the season and they are in the bottom of the Central Division and have the 2nd worst record in the entire league. The Pistons enter this game with a 3-2 SU record in their last five games played, with wins over the Milwaukee Bucks and San Antonio Spurs during that stretch. Detroit has not won against Utah in any of their previous 10 meetings and has dropped five straight home games against the Jazz.
Donovan Mitchell led the Jazz with 36 points the last time out but it wasn’t enough to help the Jazz beat the Indiana Pacers. Bojan Bogdanovic added 21 points and 6 rebounds while reigning Sixth Man of the Yea Jordan Clarkson added 18 points. However, Utah missed center Rudy Gobert who is out due to COVID-19 protocols as they allowed the Pacers to score 125 points.
Utah is the no. 1 scoring team in the NBA this season at 115.7 points per game. They are the 3rd best rebounding team in the NBA at 47.0 boards grabbed per contest. The Jazz are 25th in passing at 22.5 assists per game and are 12th in scoring defense at only 107.1 points per game allowed.
The Pistons got 17 points from Hamidou Diallo against Orlando. Diallo also added six rebounds and three steals in an excellent performance on both ends of the floor. Saddiq Bey also added 16 points and 6 rebounds while top draft pick Cade Cunningham scored 12 points but struggled to shoot at just 3-14 from the floor. Josh Jackson also contributed 11 points off the Pistons bench.
Detroit is the second-lowest scoring team in the NBA at only 100.9 points per game this season. They are 26th in rebounding at 43.0 boards grabbed per contest and 28th in passing at 21.9 assists per game. The Pistons are also only 22nd in scoring defense at 110.6 points per game allowed this season.
The Jazz are 15-5 SU in their last 20 games played. Utah is 10-2 SU in their last 12 games played on the road. The Pistons are 4–16 SU in their last 20 games played. Detroit is 5-15 SU in their last 20 games played at home.
Head to head, the Jazz are 10-0 SU in their last 10 games played against the Pistons. Detroit has lost five straight home games against Utah.
Please Note
Utah has lost back-to-back games against the Raptors and Pacers, both of which are under .500 this season. So this isn’t a Utah team that cannot be beaten by the teams in the lower half of the NBA standings.
However, the Pistons are arguably one of the worst teams in the league this season and they are just 29th in scoring this season. Meanwhile, the Jazz rank 1st in the entire league in scoring and are no. 12 in scoring defense.
Making things worse for Detroit is the fact that they are 22nd in the league in scoring defense so even if the Jazz will still be without Rudy Gobert here. They can always turn on the after-burners and outscore the Pistons in a track meet. I’m going with the Jazz to snap their losing streak against the Pistons.
Prediction: Utah Jazz
The Jazz are 3-10 ATS in their last 13 games played. Utah is 1-4 ATS in their last five games against the Eastern Conference, 2-6 ATS in their last eight games after an ATS loss, 3-9-1 ATS in their last 13 games after allowing more than 100 points in their previous game, 3-9-1 ATS in their last 13 games after scoring 100 or more points in their previous game, and 0-5 ATS in their last five games after a straight-up loss of more than 10 points.
The Pistons are 5-5 ATS in their last 10 games played. Detroit is 3-1 ATS in their last four games played at home, 5-2 ATS in their last seven games against an opponent with a winning percentage higher than .600, 1-5 ATS in their last six games against the Western Conference, 1-6 ATS in their last seven games against the Northwest Division, 1-4 ATS in their last five Monday games, 8-20-1 ATS in their last 29 home games against an opponent with a winning road record, and 14-36-2 ATS in their last 52 games after a straight-up win.

Odds from BetOnline as of 01/10/2022
The Jazz are just 10-7 ATS as away favorites, with an ATS plus/minus of +3.9. On the road overall, they are 11-8 ATS and also with an ATS plus/minus of +3.9. Overall, Utah is just 19-21 ATS with an ATS plus/minus of +0.7 points.
There’s no question that Utah is one of the top teams in the NBA this season as they have the league’s 4th best record at 28-12. However, not only has been Utah under the .500 mark when it comes to covering the spread, they are beating the spread line by less than one point overall and +3.9 points on the road. That plus the absence of Rudy Gobert should make this a single-digit loss for the Pistons.
Prediction: Pistons +12
The over is 4-2 in Utah’s last six games played. However, the total has gone under in five out of their last eight road games. The under is also 6-1 in their last seven road games against an opponent with a home winning percentage below .400, 12-4 in their last 16 games against an opponent with a losing straight up record, 11-4 in their last 15 road games against an opponent with a losing home record, and 13-5 in their last 18 games against an opponent with a winning percentage below .400.
Head to head, the total has gone under in 10 out of the last 13 meetings between these two teams.

Odds from BetOnline as of 01/10/2022
These teams have combined to score an average of 196.3 points per game in their last 10 head to head meetings and 206.67 points per game in their most recent three encounters. Utah has gone over 222 points in eight out of their last 10 games played but they got help from their opponents who scored at least 108 points in seven out of those games. The Pistons might not be able to give the same kind of support.
Detroit is barely hitting the century mark at 100.9 points per game this season. The Pistons have failed to score at least 100 points in half of their last six games. Unless Detroit replicates their wins over San Antonio and Milwaukee where they scored at least 115 points, this game is likely hitting the under.
