La Liga 2019-20 Early Betting Odds and Pick

The 2019-20 La Liga season will be the 89th edition of the top football division of the Spanish football league system. Run by the  Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional, the tournament will be contested by 20 teams, including 17 sides from the 2018-19 season and three sides promoted from the 2018-19 Segunda Division.

Since its inception, a total of 62 teams have competed in the La Liga. Among them, only nine have been crowned as champions. Real Madrid has won a record 33 La Liga titles while Barcelona is their closest rival with 26. Atletico Madrid is the third team to win double-digit titles with 10.

The 2019-20 La Liga will open on August 16, 2019, and the two-time defending champions Barcelona have been installed as the top soccer betting favorites to win a third straight crown.

Here are the early odds to win the La Liga 2019-20. Odds were taken from Bookmaker.eu as of 6/20/19:

Team Odds
Barcelona -180
Real Madrid +145
Atletico Madrid +2250
Valencia +12000
Sevilla +17500
Getafe +27500
Field +6750

As expected, the current odds board shows that La Liga is a three-way contest with the usual suspects as favorites.

Who Are The Favorites?

Barcelona has been the dominant side in the last decade as they have won 8 out of the last 11 La Liga titles. Overall, their 26 titles rank only second to Real Madrid for the most wins by any team in La Liga history. Barcelona’s emphatic victory in the 2018-19 La Liga has made them the soccer betting favorites to win again in 2019-20. Barcelona won the La Liga on April 28, 2019, with a 1-0 victory over Levante and with still three games to spare. Barca finished an impressive 11 points clear of second placer Atletico Madrid at 87-76.

It was but fitting that Lionel Messi scored the title-clinching goal versus Levante. Messi led La Liga with 36 goals on the season. Messi and Sevilla’s Paolo Sarabia also assisted on a league-high 13 goals this season which only means that the Argentinian superstar had a hand ( or foot ? ) in more than half of his squad’s 90 goals scored during the 2018-19 season.

Real Madrid is the most successful team in the La Liga with 33 titles won. Their last win came in 2017 while they finished third in the last two editions of the tournament. But last season was one of the worst seasons in Real Madrid’s history as they managed to win just one Trophy- The FIFA Club World Cup.

Real got the biggest signing of the transfer season so far after they bagged Belgian Eden Hazard in the transfer market. Hazard’s signing was the second big movement of the offseason. Earlier, Real Madrid brought back Zinedine Zidane after they struggled with three different coaches last season.

Atletico Madrid is the third-winningest squad in La Liga play with a total of 10 La Liga titles. Atletico surprised Real Madrid by finishing second in La Liga play. The Los Indios don’t operate a budget similar to their Rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid but they are well managed by Diego Simeon.

Who Wins?

Not resting on their laurels and expecting their rivals to make big moves during the offseason, Barca has already signed Frenkie de Jong of Ajax. The side was also targeting de Jong’s Ajax teammate Matthijs de Ligt but the latter turned down a move to Camp Nou even if the teams had already agreed to a  €75m fee. De Ligt is reportedly choosing between PSG, Juventus and Bayern Munich.

Despite winning La Liga, all may not be well in Catalan. There are several questions surrounding the team, including the long-term future of manager Ernesto Valverede. Messi is both hurt and disappointed that his goal of winning another Champions League trophy went crashing in Merseyside.

Real Madrid is second on the odds board despite finishing third in La Liga last season. This is a combination of the big moves they made during this summer and also based on the premise that Real won’t struggle for two consecutive seasons.

Look, there is still an eternity of transfer business to come. But the resources placed on Zidane are huge and he has been guaranteed that he can mold his own team based on his standards. With that freedom, I think Real Madrid means serious business in 2019-20 and should be able to build a winner that topples Barcelona. Prediction: Real Madrid
