The Los Angeles Lakers head to Barclays Center to take on the Brooklyn Nets on Monday night.

Los Angeles is still hurting after a non-call at the end of regulation last Saturday night in Boston which cost them the game. The Lakers are 23-27 SU on the season and they are in 13th place in the Western Conference team standings, 11 games off the pace of the Denver Nuggets but just two behind the 10th-seeded Utah Jazz and a play-in tournament spot. Los Angeles is 4-6 SU in their last 10 games played after winning five in a row.

Brooklyn is still without Kevin Durant but with Kyrie Irving putting up big numbers, the Nets have salvaged to win three out of their last five games played. Brooklyn is 30-19 SU on the season and they are 4th in the Eastern Conference team standings, 5 games behind the Boston Celtics. Brooklyn is also just 4-6 SU in their last 10 games played.

The Lakers beat the Nets 116-103 last November 13, 2022, in their first meeting of the season.

Basketball Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers lost another close game last Saturday, dropping a 125-121 OT game against the league-leading Boston Celtics. Los Angeles gave the Celtics all that they could handle and even had a chance to win with the final play of the game. However, the referees missed a foul call on Jayson Tatum that would have sent LeBron James to the foul line with one second left in the ball game.

James scored 41 points but his efforts ended in another defeat for his team. Anthony Davis had 16 points and 10 rebounds off the bench with Sixth Man of the Year favorite Russell Westbrook adding 12 points and 7 assists. Patrick Beverley also scored 15 points while Dennis Schroder and Lonnie Walker IV each scored 13 for the Lakers.

Los Angeles is scoring 117.0 points per game this season while grabbing 44.9 rebounds per contest and issuing 25.0 assists per game.

Basketball Brooklyn Nets

The Nets beat the Knicks last Saturday behind another big 4th quarter performance from Kyrie Irving. Irving scored 21 of his 32 points in the final period as the Nets held off the Knicks 122-115. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Nets who continue to await Kevin Durant’s return. Irving has averaged 31.6 points per game in the Nets’ last 10 games played.

Joe Harris added 16 points on 4-7 three-point shooting while Seth Curry and Royce O’Neale each scored 14 points. Nicolas Claxton recorded another double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds while also issuing six assists with 3 blocked shots. Yuta Watanabe leads the Nets’ reserves with 9 points on 3-3 three-point shooting. Ben Simmons and TJ Warren missed the game for the Nets with injuries.

The Lakers have gone 4-6 SU since winning 5 straight games from December 30 to January 7. Four of those losses were by five or fewer points, including Saturday night’s 125-121 overtime loss to the Boston Celtics where the Lakers played very well only to be ruined by questionable calls by the referees down the stretch.

LeBron James was slapped on the arm by Jayson Tatum on the Lakers’ final play in regulation but the referees did not blow their whistle. Had a foul been called, James would have gone to the foul line with no time left in the clock. Instead, the game went to OT where the Celtics outplayed a visibly upset Lakers team to win the game.

While James and the Lakers got a raw deal on Saturday, Kyrie Irving exploded in the 4th quarter of the Nets game against the New York Knicks. Irving scored 21 out of his 32 points in the final stanza to lead the Knicks to a 122-115 win. He has scored at least 30 points in a sixth consecutive game, the longest such streak of his career which is also the longest streak in Brooklyn Nets history.

Since missing a game versus the San Antonio Spurs last January 17 with a calf injury, Irving has averaged 36.3 points per game while shooting 51.7% from the field and 47.4% from three-point distance. Nic Claxton posted a double-double for the 7th time in his last 8 games as the Nets continue to navigate without the injured Kevin Durant. Brooklyn also missed Ben Simmons and TJ Warren last Saturday and both could be out as well on Monday night.

Monday marks the 14th head-to-head meeting between former Cavs teammates James and Irving and interestingly, James has won 10 of those matchups. However. James and Anthony Davis will not be suiting up for the Lakers on Monday, putting the Lakers at a disadvantage here.

No doubt that the Lakers are looking to bounce back from Saturday’s tough loss but that won’t be possible without their two best players.

The Lakers are in a tough spot here with LBJ and AD not suiting up. However, the Lakers still have the likes of Russell Westbrook, Dennis Schroder, and Lonnie Walker IV. Thomas Bryant and Rui Hachimura could put up points on the scoreboard for the Lakers.

While I don’t expect the Lakers to beat the Nets on the road without LBJ and AD, they should be able to keep up with the Nets and give a good account of themselves. I expect the Nets to win but having the Lakers at +8.5 points with Westbrook and company on hand is good value. I’ll take the plus points here.

Prediction: Lakers +8.5

The Lakers have seen the total go over 230 points in five out of their last six games played but that’s mainly because LeBron James was putting up one big game after another. On Monday, it won’t be only LBJ who will be out but also Anthony Davis.

Although the Nets don’t have KD yet, Irving and the rest of the supporting cast have been able to put up decent numbers as the Nets have put up at least 122 points in each of their last four games.

The Lakers also have good scorers on their side but they won’t be able to outscore a Nets team that has watched Irving score 30+ points per game in six consecutive games. To win this game, the Lakers need to play good defense and limit Irvng’s scoring opportunities. With plenty of good defensive guards on hand, they should be able to do that to some extent, making this game fall short of the total.

Prediction: Under 230.5
