The Orlando Magic visit the Phoenix Suns on Thursday night at Footprint Center.
Orlando is 28-41 SU on the season and they are still hoping to make the play-in tournament. As of Wednesday, the Magic are still mathematically in the race at four games behind the Washington Wizards in the East, although they are running out of games. The Magic are just 1-4 SU in their last five games played and head to Phoenix after losing to the Spurs 132-114 the last time out.
Phoenix is 37-32 SU on the year and they are in 4th place in the Western Conference team standings. The Suns have lost their last three games with Kevin Durant sitting out all three games with an ankle injury. The Suns are just 2-3 SU in their last 5 games played and head home after losing to the Milwaukee Bucks 116-104 in their last game played.
The Magic have not won back-to-back games since February and head to this matchup having lost four out of their last five games played. Orlando is still just four games off the 10th seed and is not out of the play-in race yet. But they are running out of games to play and the Suns are no easy picking even without KD.
Orlando is ranked just 27th in the NBA in scoring at 111.6 points per game this season. Paolo Banchero is putting up 20.1 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game this season. Franz Wagner is putting up 18.7 points per contest while Wendell Carter Jr. is contributing 15.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.
The Suns won their first three games with Kevin Durant in the lineup. But since KD suffered another injury, they have lost three straight games. Before their current losing skid, the Suns had not lost three in a row since January. So expect the Suns to try and get the sour taste off their mouth on Thursday night.
Devin Booker leads the Suns in scoring at 27.8 points per game this season. Deandre Ayton is putting up a double-double this year at 18.4 points and 10.2 rebounds per game while also leading the team in blocked shots at 1.9 per contest. The Suns are scoring 113.2 points per game this season while also grabbing 44.3 boards per contest and issuing 27.1 assists per game.
The Magic are 2-4 SU in their last 6 games played against the Suns. Orlando is 1-3 SU in their last 4 games played in Phoenix.
Orlando Magic SU trends:
Phoenix Suns SU trends:
The Suns continue to struggle without Kevin Durant. After going on a four-game winning streak, Phoenix has dropped its last three games played with KD missing all three losses.
They are currently 4th in the West at 37-32 but it remains to be seen how far they can go in the playoffs without Durant. The Suns gave up several rotation players in the KD trade. Now they are having trouble finding consistent scoring options outside of Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton with KD out. Josh Okogie, Torrey Craig, Ish Wainwright, and Terrence Ross combined for only 24 points in their last game against the Milwaukee Bucks.
In that game, the Bucks closed out with a 24-9 run with Giannis Antetokounmpo leading the way. The Greek Freak had 36 points, 11 rebounds, and 8 assists and the Suns had no answer for him.
The Magic opened a four-game road trip on Tuesday, losing to the San Antonio Spurs 132-114. Orlando allowed San Antonio to hit a franchise-high 22 three-pointers and issue a season-high 39 assists in the game. Paolo Banchero led the way with 27 points while Wendell Carter Jr. added 16 for Orlando.
They have lost five out of their last seven games. Despite that, the Magic are just four games behind the 10th-seeded Washington Wizards so they are not yet out of the playoff race.
Orlando defeated Phoenix 114-97 during their first meeting of the season last November 11. Phoenix shot just 13-42 or 31% from three-point distance in the loss.
The Suns have struggled without KD but they will be facing an Orlando team that is one of the worst in the league. The Magic are also just 12-22 SU on the road this season. The Suns have the tools to win this one, no doubt about it. Give me the Suns to win at home.
Prediction: Phoenix Suns
The Magic are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games played against the Suns. Orlando is 12-4 ATS in their last 16 games played in Phoenix.

While Orlando is a mere 12-22 SU on the road this season, the Magic are 18-13-3 ATS when playing away from home this year. They are also 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games played against the Suns.
Phoenix has lost three in a row. They are looking to get back on track and the Magic are the perfect opponent to do that. Orlando is struggling on the road this season and they are struggling overall this year.
I expect the Magic to lose to the Suns. However, given how poorly the Suns have played since Durant got hurt, I won’t be surprised to see the Magic stay in the thick of the fight in this game. The Suns are just 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 games played. I think the Suns win but the Magic cover.
Prediction: Magic +7
The under is 6-4 in the last 10 games played between these two teams. The under is 9-3 in their last 12 meetings in Phoenix.

The Magic have played bad defense as of late, the reason why the over has hit in each of their last five games heading to this matchup. They have conceded at least 131 points thrice in their last four games played.
The Suns have struggled without KD but they have hit over 228 points five times in their last six games played. Phoenix has also struggled on defense, allowing 116 points four times in their last five games played.
Both are in the Top 20 in the league in pace. Even without KD, the Suns have Devin Booker who should be able to have a big game against Orlando’s struggling defense.
