Division rivals New York Mets and Atlanta Braves begin a three-game series at Truist Park on Monday night.
The Mets are 53-33 on the season and they are currently on top of the National League East division. Meanwhile, the defending World Series champions Atlanta Braves are second behind the Mets at 52-35 and are now just 1.5 games back of the leaders.
New York is just 6-6 in their last 12 games played as they have cooled off after a strong start. The Mets split their last series against the Marlins 2-2 with Sandy Alcantara throwing another gem as Miami beat New York 2-0 in 10 innings on Sunday.
Atlanta is 7-3 in their last 10 games played and has lost just once in their last seven games. The Braves swept the Washington Nationals 3-0 in their last series and defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 3 games to one in the series before that. Atlanta walked off the National 4-3 on Sunday.
These teams played four games last May and they split the four meetings 2-2.
The Mets have one of the top pitching rotations in baseball and they are currently allowing the 9th least runs per game at 4.01. New York is also stout offensively as they are the third in scoring at 4.87 runs per game and 4th in team batting average at .256. The Mets rank 18th in home runs per game at 1.01 and they are only 26th in stolen bases with 30.
Max Scherzer gets the nod to open for the Mets on Monday. Scherzer is pitching in only his second game back from injury. He was great in his previous appearance as he threw for 6.0 innings while allowing 2 hits and zero earned runs while shutting the Cincinnati Reds. For the season, Scherzer has an ERA of 2.26 and a WHIP of 0.88.
Starling Marte could be out as he missed Sunday’s game with a groin injury. Meanwhile, C James McCann is also out indefinitely with his own groin issues.
The Braves are 5th in the league in scoring at 4.81 runs per game this year. They are also 8th best in team batting average with their 2.51. Atlanta ranks second in the majors in home runs per game at 1.57. Atlanta also ranks 15th in stolen bases with a total of 47 already taken.
Max Fried will open on top of the mound for the Braves on Monday. The 28-year-old left-hander from Santa Monica California is 9-2 on the season with an ERA of 2.52 and a WHIP of 1.02 in a total of 17 starts. Fried has allowed 30 earned runs on 93 hits with 100 strikeouts and 17 walks. The Braves are 9-0 in Fried’s last nine starts. In his last appearance, Fried shut down the Cardinals as he conceded just five hits in six scoreless innings in a 3-0 win by the Braves.
The Braves will be without Ozzie Albies who is out with a foot injury. Atlanta will also be without left fielder Adam Duval who is dealing with a personal issue.
The Braves are 4-2 in their last six games played against the Mets. Atlanta is also 4-1 in their last five home games against the Mets.

The defending champions are on a roll right now with one loss in their last seven games played and seven out of their last 10. Atlanta ranks 8th in team batting average and is 5th in scoring runs. The Braves are also averaging 1.57 home runs per game which is the second-best average in the entire league.
Atlanta is also starting Max Fried who is 9-2 this season with an ERA of 2.52 and a WHIP of 1.02. The Braves have won nine straight games when Fried is their starter and are tough to beat when he is on the mound.
The Mets will counter with Max Scherzer but this will only be his second start since returning from injury. With Atlanta’s ability to score in various ways, Scherzer could find himself in trouble here.
New York has struggled with left-handed pitchers this season as they are just 18-14 against southpaws. Fried just shut down the Cardinals in his last outing. I think they will have another solid start here. Prediction: Atlanta Braves
The total has gone over in six out of the last 10 head-to-head meetings between these two teams. The under is however 2-1 in the last three games played.

Odds from BetOnline as of 07/11/2022
The Mets are allowing the 9th fewer runs per game in the majors and they will have Max Scherzer opening the game. Scherzer currently has an ERA of 2.26 and a WHIP of 0.88. Although this is only his second start since returning from injury, Scherzer dominated the Reds in his first start back.
Meanwhile, the Braves will send Max Fried to the mound. He too has been on a tear as of late and has an ERA of 2.52 and a WHIP of 1.02. In his last start, Fried shut out the St. Louis Cardinals and he should be more than ready to face the Mets on Monday.
The total looks too low at first glance but when you take a look at the starters, these are two very good pitchers from both sides who are coming off superb efforts in their most recent starts. New York hasn’t played well against left-handers and they are facing one of the best lefties in the games. I like these teams to hit the under in what should be a pitcher’s duel.
