The Boston Red Sox travel to Angel Stadium to begin a four-game set with the Los Angeles Angels.
Boston is a middling 27-27 on the season and they are 4th in the AL East division, a far 12 games behind the New York Yankees in the division standings. The Red Sox are also 6th overall in the American League standings. They have won six out of their last 10 games played including their last four.
Los Angeles is 27-28 on the season but is second in the AL West division and 8.5 games behind the Houston Astros on the divisional leaderboard. The Angels are 0-10 in their last 10 games played and have dropped 11 consecutive games.
These teams have played three times already this season with the Angels leading the series 2-1. Los Angeles won the last meeting 8-0 in Boston last May 5, 2022.
The Red Sox head to Los Angeles after sweeping the Oakland A’s in their previous three-game set. Boston has now won four straight games and eight out of their last 11 games played on the road.
Rafael Devers leads the team with 12 home runs with 31 RBIs. Trevor Story leads Boston with 41 RBIs while also producing 9 homers. JD Martinez leads the Red Sox with a batting average of .353 with 23 RBIs and 5 home runs while Xander Bogaerts has contributed 26 RBIs and six home runs on the season.
Right-hander Michael Wacha will start for the Red Sox in the season opener. The 30-year-old from Iowa City has a record of 3-1 with an ERA of 2.43 and a WHIP of 1.01. Wacha has pitched in a total of 40.1 innings this season and has allowed 12 runs on 27 hits with 27 strikeouts and 14 walks.
In his most recent start, Wacha conceded only one run on three hits in 5.2 innings pitched in a 2-1 loss to Cincinnati. Prior to that loss, the Red Sox won Wacha’s last four starts.
The Angels appeared to be headed to victory when they led 6-2 entering the 8th inning. However, the Phillies rallied to win the game 9-7 and sent the Angels to their 11th consecutive defeat. With the loss, the Angels are now below the .500 mark at 27-28.
Mike Trout is the Angels’ leader in batting average at .274. Trout also leads the team in home runs with 13 and an on-base percentage of .378. Jared Walsh leads Los Angeles with 33RBIs with 10 home runs while two-way star Shohei Ohtani has 32 RBIs and 11 home runs on the season.
Noah Syndergaard gets the start for the Angels. The 29-year-old from Mansfield, Texas has posted a record of 4-3 in 8 starts this season. Syndergaard has an ERA of 4.02 and a WHIP of 1.21. He has pitched in a total of 40.1 innings and has allowed 20 runs on 40 hits with 27 strikeouts and nine walks.
In his most recent start, Syndergaard lasted just 2.1 innings after allowing five runs on seven hits during a 9-1 loss to the Yankees. The Angels are just 2-3 in their last five games played.
The Red Sox are 1-4 in their last five games played against the Angels. However, Los Angeles is 3-6 in their last nine home games played against Boston.
The Boston Red Sox are:
12-5 in their last 17 overall.
4-1 in their last 5 road games.
7-0 in their last 7 vs. American League West.
7-1 in their last 8 games with the total set at 11.0 or lower.

5-1 in their last 6 road games v a right-handed starter.
5-1 in their last 6 road games with the total set at 11.0 or higher.
5-1 in their last 6 road games with the total set at 6.5 or lower.
6-2 in their last 8 opening games of a series.
6-2 in their last 8 games with the total set at 7.0-8.5.
5-2 in their last 7 games as an underdog.
5-2 in their last 7 road games with the total set at 7.0-8.5.
12-5 in their last 17 games on grass.
1-4 in their last 5 Monday games.
The Los Angeles Angels are:
3-14 in their last 17 overall.

23-9 in their last 32 home games against a team with a losing record.
3-7 in their last 10 versus a team with a losing record.

0-8 in their last 8 games with the total set at 7.0-8.5.
0-4 in their last 4 home games with the total set at 7.0-8.5.
No question, Michael Wacha is having a great season but may be due for regression. His BABIP of .198 is not sustainable and so is his 81.9%. When both numbers start to drop, so will his ERA of 2.43.
However, the Red Sox bats have awakened. They lead the league in OPS (.843) wOBA (.366), and wRC+ (140). Rafael Devers leads the league in hits with 75 while Xander Bogaerts is 5th with 64 and JD Martinez is 10th with 61.
Syndergaard has spent some time on the injured list and he’s having a roller-coaster run in his first year on the West Coast. Most recently, he returned to the Bronx where he conceded five runs over 2 ½ innings against the Yankees. His control is okay but other than that, there isn’t much to like about his game this season.
The Angels are one of the top barrel teams in baseball but are at the bottom of the league in producing hard contact. Boston’s bullpen isn’t the most trustworthy but at least, they are pitching right at the average. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles bullpen has an ERA of 6.04 which is the 4th worst in the majors. The Red Sox are red hot and should be able to win this one.

Odds from BetOnline as of 06/06/2022
These teams have combined to score an average of 8.7 runs per game in their last 10 games played and 9.0 runs per game in their most recent three head-to-head encounters.
The over is 5-3-2 in Boston’s last 10 games played and 6-2-3 in their last games away from home. They have scored 27 runs during their current four-game winning streak and have scored at least seven runs thrice during that span.
Meanwhile, the Angels have allowed six or more runs eight out of their last 10 games played, including nine or more runs five times in their last seven games played. Syndergaard has allowed five or more runs in two out of his last six starts and he’s going to be hit by a Red Sox team that is red hot in scoring. Give me these teams to hit the over.
