Utah State takes on Wake Forest at the BB&T Field on August 30, 2019, in Week 1 of the 2019 NCAA Football season.
Utah State
After a season where their defensive line couldn’t get to the run, the Utah State Aggies underwent a rebuild. There was some hope for instant help but unfortunately, Old Dominion transferee Miles Fox suffered a torn Achilles tendon. The Aggies have the accurate Jordan Love throwing the football and I’m not sure if the Wake Forest defense can get to him. Utah State’s quick-hit offense isn’t going to control the clock however, it’s going to set the tone of the game. Their veteran defense should be able to do the job on the Demon Deacons, making this a good matchup.
Wake Forest
Dave Clawson has proven his hype as a program rebuilder as he has led Wake Forest to a school-record three consecutive Bowl Game played. Despite losing their quarterback to injury, Clawson led the team to two wins in their last three games to earn a Bowl spot. In the Birmingham Bowl, Wake Forest rallied from 18 points down to win the bowl game. Their 2019 recruiting class includes three of the Top-5 highest recruits in school history. Wake Forest has a strong receiving unit that should keep the Utah State secondary on its toes. Their schedule isn’t easy though and that begins with Utah State which won 11 games last season.
Who Wins?
Utah State is 11-1 SU in their last 12 games played and the Aggies are 4-1 SU in their last five games played at home. Wake Forest is 4-2 SU in their last six games played and 5-1 SU in their last six games played in August. The Demon Deacons are 6-1 SU in their last 7 week 1 game. Head to head, Wake Forest beat Utah State 46-10 in their last meeting last September 16, 2017.
It’s not going to be an easy game for Wake Forest. But now that Jamie Newman is settled as the quarterback, the offense should work for them early and that should force the Aggies to press on defense. Utah State has a good defense but at this stage of the season, it’s not yet where it’s supposed to be. This should be a terrific game but I think Wake Forest finds its way to make the big plays down the stretch and win this game. Prediction: Wake Forest
Other Bets To Make
The Aggies are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games played and they are 3-14 ATS in their last 17 games like football betting underdogs. Wake Forest is 5-10 ATS in their last 15 games played and the Demon Deacons are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games played at home. They are also 1-4 ATS in their last five games as betting favorite.

Utah State has an experienced defense that should keep them in the thick of things. I expect a close game but I think the Demon Deacons will pull it off in the end. Prediction: Wake Forest
The over is 5-2 in the last seven-week 1 of Utah State and the over is 5-1 in the Aggies’ last six Friday games. The over is also 2-0 in the last two meetings between these two squads.

These teams combined to score over 80 points per game last season but they have combined for just 58 points per game in their last two meetings. This is Week 1 and teams are likely not going to be as sharp as you’d expect them to be. I think 63 is too much for both teams in Week 1. Prediction: Under 63.5
