Villarreal CF tests Real Madrid in La Liga action on September 2, 2019, at the Estadio de la Ceramica.
Villarreal CF was founded in 1923 and is considered a low profile team but has challenged heavyweights like Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid for trophies during the past decade. Last season though, Villarreal finished just 14th in the final La Liga table and they are hoping to bounce back with a vengeance this season under Javier Calleja as head coach.
They have never won the La Liga title but finished as runners-up in 2007/08. In the lower divisions, they finished second in the Segunda Division during the 2012/13 season and twice finished as second placers in the Segunda B Division. Villarreal won the Tercera Division in 1970 and are two-time winners of the UEFA Intertoto Cup. As of August 2019, they are ranked 22nd in the UEFA’s Coefficient Rankings.
Santi Carzola was Villarreal’s top performer during the previous term. The 34-year old from Llanera, Spain returned for a third tour of duty with Villarreal last season and scored four goals in 35 appearances. But more than his goal production, it was nice to see Carzola return to La Liga after suffering an injury in England. With more support from his teammates this season, look for Carzola to even shine this time around.
Samuel Chukwueze burst to the scene last season and along with Carzola was one of the bright spots for this club in an otherwise unimpressive year. The pressure is on him to deliver more this term but he has the God-given talent to shine at the highest level. I expect him to play a big role in Villareal this year.
Real Madrid was founded in 1902 and at $4.2B was one of the highest-earning football clubs in 2019. The Los Blancos are among three founding members of the Football League who have never been relegated from the top flight since its inception in 1929. They were the first football club to win the Champions League in back to back years and then topped that by winning a third straight in May 2018.
The Los Blancos have won a record 33 La Liga titles, 19 Copa del Rey, 10 Supercopa de Espana, and a Copa de Liga. In European competition, they have won a total of 13 European Cup titles, two UEFA Cups and four UEFA Super Cups. Real Madrid has also won a record seven club football championships.
The signing of Eden Hazard gives Real Madrid a superstar that they have been missing in the recent seasons. The Belgian forward is a true X-factor who can win games on his own and that’s something Real Madrid has badly needed. Unfortunately for the Los Blancos, Hazard suffered a thigh muscle injury in training and has yet to suit up for Real Madrid.
Karim Benzema has been Real Madrid’s top offensive producer so far with two goals in two matches played. The 31-year old Frenchman scored a total of 21 goals in 36 matches last season and he hopes to pick up where he left off especially with Eden Hazard and Isco still in sickbay.
Villareal heads to this contest with a record of 3-1-2 SU in their last six games across all competitions. On the other hand, Real Madrid has lost just once in their last six outings, going 3-2-1 SU over that period. Head to head, these two clubs have played in a total of 36 matches with Real Madrid winning 20 matches and Villarreal with only four victories. In their last match played last May 5, 2019, Real Madrid emerged victorious via a 3-2 score.
While Real Madrid spent to sign Eden Hazard and company, Villareal had a rather quiet transfer season with minimal signings. That said, Real Madrid has too much talent level and experience here and that’s why they are the soccer betting favorites here. I think these squads exist at a different level right now. Real Madrid has historically dominated this match up and I think that trend continues here. Prediction: Real Madrid
