Chicago White Sox vs Los Angeles Angels 06/27/2022 Preview and Prediction

The Chicago White Sox travel to Angel Stadium to play Game 1 of a three-game set on Monday night. The first pitch is scheduled for 9:38 p.m. ET with the Angels entering the game as home favorites.

Chicago is 34-37 on the season and they are currently in third place in the AL Central Division, 5.5 games behind the Minnesota Twins in the division standings. The White Sox are 4-6 in their last 10 games played but snapped a four-game losing skid with a 4-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday to avoid getting swept in their four-game series.

Los Angeles is 35-40 on the campaign and are third in the American League West Division. The Angels are a far 11.5 games behind the Houston Astros in the division standings. Los Angeles is 5-5 in their last 10 games played and lost their last two series, both 1-2, versus the Royals and Mariners.

The White Sox are 18-16 on the road this season while the Angels are 19-22 at home this campaign. These teams have played four games this season and are 2-2.

Chicago White Sox

The White Sox will be sending Lucas Giolito on the mound on Monday night. Giolito was hammered for seven runs on 11 hits and a walk over five innings in a loss to the Blue Jays last Wednesday. One start before that, the 27-year old right-hander gave up 8 runs on 7 hits in 5.0 innings pitched in a 13-3 loss to the Astros.

Giolito is 4-4 in 12 starts with an ERA of 5.40 with a WHIP of 1.56 this season. In a total of 63.1 innings pitched this season, he has allowed 38 earned runs on 73 hits with 76 strikeouts and 26 walks. The White Sox are 2-5 in his last seven starts.

Chicago has been dealing with injuries to key players which has affected their scoring production this season. The White Sox rank 26th in home runs with 58 and they are just 24th with a total of 290 runs scored this season. They are 7th in batting average at .252 but are only 20th in OBP at .309 and are 24th in slugging percentage at .377.

Los Angeles Angels

Meanwhile, Noah Syndergaard will start for the Angels in the series opener. The 29-year old from Mansfield, Texas is 4-6 on the season with an ERA of 3.86 and a WHIP of 1.20 in 11 starts. Syndergaard has allowed 25 earned runs on 55 hits with 40 strikeouts and 15 walks in a total of 58.1 innings pitched.

In his last start, Syndergaard allowed five runs in 8 hits in 7.1 innings pitched while picking up a loss during a 6-2 defeat to the Royals. The Angels are 3-6 in Syndergaard’s last nine starts.

Shohei Ohtani has been very good on the mount but the Angels staff has a mediocre ERA of .385 while allowing opponents to hit at .229. Mike Trout is hitting at .289 with 20 home runs but the Angels are just 19th in batting average at .238 and 14th in runs scored at 313 this season.

White Sox vs Angels Betting Prediction

The White Sox are 6-17 in their last 23 games played against the Angels. Chicago is also 5-22 in their last 27 meetings in Los Angeles.

The White Sox are:

  • 1-4 in their last 5 games played overall.

  • 6-2 in their last 8 road games.

  • 1-4 in their last 5 games on grass.

  • 1-4 in their last 5 versus the American League West Division.

  • 1-4 in their last 5 games against a right-handed starter.

  • 6-2 in their last 8 road games with the total set at 7.0-8.5.

  • 9-4 in their last 13 road games with the total set at 6.5 or higher.

  • 2-5 in their last 7 games with the total set at 8.0-9.5.

  • 4-11 in their last 15 road games with the total set at 11.0 or lower.

  • 4-0 in their last 4 road games vs. a team with a losing record.

  • 5-1 in their last 6 Monday games.

  • 5-1 in their last 6 road games against a right-handed starter.

The Angels are:

  • 7-23 in their last 30 games played overall.

  • 3-14 in their last 17 home games.

  • 4-1 in their last 5 games with the total set at 7.0-8.5.

  • 9-4 in their last 13 against the American League Central.

  • 6-16 in their last 22 games versus a right-handed starter.

  • 7-23 in their last 30 games on grass.

  • 2-7 in their last 9 home games with the total set at 7.0-8.5.

  • 1-4 in their last 5 Monday games.

  • 2-8 in their last 10 games vs. a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30.

  • 1-4 in their last 5 vs. a team with a losing record.

  • 1-5 in their last 6 home games vs. a team with a losing record.

  • 1-8 in their last 9 Game 1s of a series.

  • 1-10 in their last 11 games with the total set at 9.0-10.5.

  • 0-4 in their last 4 home games against a right-handed starter.

  • 0-4 in their last 4 home games with the total set at 9.0-10.5.

Both teams have not lived up to expectations this season. The White Sox were favored to win the AL Central Division title but are currently just third and below the .500 mark heading to the final week of June. Meanwhile, the Angels were off to a good start but have stumbled to a 7-23 mark in their last 30 games to fall to 4th place in the AL West.

Giolito has been mauled in his last five starts, giving up at least four runs in each game while posting an ERA of 9.00 in 21 innings pitched during the month of June 2022. He has given up seven home runs this month and averages fewer than 5 innings per start on the road.

Given Giolito’s struggles, the Angels should be able to take advantage and get their offense going. Syndergaard should have a good outing given that the White Sox are without three out of their four best hitters. I don’t like how both teams are playing but the White Sox look worse than the Halos. I’ll take the Angels here.

Prediction: Los Angeles Angels

Odds from BetOnline as of 06/27/2022

The White Sox are seeing an average total of 9.03 runs per game but that drops to 8.09 runs per game when playing on the road. The Angels are scoring an average of 8.38 runs per game but that number improves to 8.58 runs per game when they are playing at home.

Giolito is having plenty of issues this season. He was bombarded by the Blue Jays last week. One start before that, he conceded eight runs over five innings against the Astros. Given his performance in his last five starts, it’s hard to trust him right now.

Many of the Angels’ recent games have gone under but Given Giolito’s pitching, I can see Mike Trout hitting well against Giolito’s fastball. Both these teams are averaging at least for runs per game and the total is just 8.5. I don’t see how these teams won’t be able to produce the extra run here. Prediction: Over 8.5
