The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels open a three-game set at the Angel Stadium in Anaheim on Monday night.
New York has struggled since the All-Str break and has seen their lead in the AL East team standing cut down to 7.5 games. The Yankees though have played better as of late, winning six out of their last 10 games before Sunday’s games. New York is 78-50 on the season and they are just 33-30 on the road this year.
Meanwhile, the Angels are 55-73 on the season and they are next to last in the AL West team standings. Los Angeles is way out of the playoff conversation and they are 26.5 games behind the Houston Astros in the division standings. The Angels are 4-6 in their last 10 games played but head to this series having won their last three games played. They are just 26-36 at home and are 31-28 as betting underdogs this season.
New York Yankees
The Yankees began the season red hot but have struggled since the All-Star break. New York is just 9-16 this month and has dropped their last two games entering Sunday’s schedule. They have gone from having the best record in baseball to being the second-best team in the American League, 3.5 games behind the Houston Astros.
Frankie Montas will open on top of the mound for the Yankees Montas has allowed only 60 runs in 124.1 innings pitched this season but has conceded 16 runs in 19.2 innings since being traded to the Yankees. He has an expected opponents slugging percentage of .395, a barrel percentage of 7.7, and a 3.95 expected ERA so it won’t be hard for the Angels’ big bats to make hard contact and crush the ball.
The Yankees looked like they had gotten their offense back in recent weeks but during their last two games, they were back struggling to plate in runs. Aaron Judge is slashing .295/.396/.661 with 49 home runs this season. Anthony Rizzo is slashing .223/.338/.483 with 28 home runs. Giancarlo Stanton also has 24 homers while DJ LeMahieu has 22 dingers for the Yankees.
Los Angeles Angels
The Angels are having a disappointing season but they hope to finish strong and build momentum for the next campaign. Despite having Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout, Los Angeles is out of the playoff equation and are close to 30 games behind in the division standings.
Jose Suarez will start for the Angels on Monday. The 24-year-old left-hander from Venezuela is just 4-10 this season with an ERA of 4.19 and a WHIP of 1.34. He has a decent .235 expected batting average but has conceded 35 runs in a total of 73 innings pitched. Suarez has a .391 expected slugging percentage, a 9.3 barrel percentage, and a 3.95 expected ERA.
Los Angeles’ offense has let them down this season as the team is averaging only 3.79 runs per game this season. However, the team is coming off a series against Toronto where they scored 22 runs in three games while shutting out the Blue Jays twice in those games. Shohei Ohtani is having another fantastic season with 28 home runs with a slash line of .260/.354/.508 while Mike Trout is slashing .268/.362/.594 and also has 27 home runs

The Yankees have played better recently but are still not the same team that dominated the league before the All-Star break. They are 6-4 in their last 10 games played but are coming off a split against Oakland. New York has been terrible this month at 9-16 and they have tumbled in the standings.
Meanwhile, the Angels have been the worse team overall this season. But Los Angeles heads to this matchup after sweeping the Toronto Blue Jays in what was an important series for Toronto. Not only did they win that series, but they also dominated the Blue Jays winning via an aggregate margin of 22-3 while pitching two shutouts.
Normally, it would be easy to pick the Yankees here as they have dominated this matchup. However, New York is still not back to its previous self while the Angels may be carrying the momentum of sweeping the Blue Jays the last time out. Yankees starter Frankie Montas has allowed 16 runs in 19.2 innings pitched since getting traded to New York. Meanwhile, Los Angeles’ Jose Suarez has allowed just six earned runs over his past 28 innings pitched. Give me the Angels to win this one at home.
Prediction: Los Angeles Angels

Odds from BetOnline as of 08/29/2022
The Yankees rank second in baseball with a total of 639 runs scored this season and they are averaging 5.03 runs per game. With players like Aaron Judge and Anthony Rizzo, the Yankees batting order should be able to score runs against the Angles.
Meanwhile, the Angels’ offense has been playing well as of late, producing 22 total runs in three games against the Blue Jays in their last series played. With Montas struggling in a Yankees uniform, the likes of Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani will be swinging and making contact throughout the game while driving in runs.
These two teams have scored an average of 9.6 runs per game in their last 10 head-to-head meetings. With the Yankees lineup carrying the team all season long and the Angels batting order producing plenty of offense in their previous series, look for this to be a high-scoring contest.
Prediction: Over 8
